She said a mammogram appointment had been cancelled during the COVID-19 pandemic, and she mistakenly thought she had already completed the screening. Her account is a personal reminder about keeping screening appointments—not a prediction of what would have happened in her individual case.
What happened to Tina Knowles?
Knowles discussed her diagnosis in April 2025, in connection with her memoir, Matriarch. News reports said the diagnosis had been made in July 2024, after she returned for screening. ABC News and Moffitt Cancer Center described the missed mammogram as part of the context for the diagnosis.
Knowles said doctors found two lumps in her left breast. Vanity Fair reported that one was benign and the other was stage 1 cancer; the two lumps were not both cancerous.
Coverage in 2025 reported that she underwent surgery to remove the tumor, including a lumpectomy, and also had a breast reduction. The Associated Press described her as cancer-free after surgery and treatment in its April 2025 account. That is a description of her status at the time of that reporting; the cited coverage does not establish a more recent clinical update.

Why did she decide to speak publicly?
Knowles said she was unsure about sharing the experience because she is private, but hoped other women could learn from it. ABC News quoted her on April 22, 2025: “I struggled with whether I would share that journey because I’m very private. But I decided to share it because I think it’s a lot of lessons in it for other women.”
She also reflected on the delay in screening: “We can catch cancer at stage 1 or even stage 0, I didn’t know there was a stage 0, I could have caught this at stage 0 if I had not missed my mammogram but I did because of COVID.” That is Knowles’s view of what might have happened; it does not establish that this individual cancer would necessarily have been found at stage 0 with an earlier mammogram. Moffitt Cancer Center describes stage 0 as noninvasive ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), while Knowles’s reported diagnosis was stage 1.

ABC News reported that her daughters, Beyoncé and Solange, supported her; Vanity Fair also described support from family during surgery. Her family’s role was part of her account, rather than a substitute for clinical information about her diagnosis.
What her experience can—and cannot—say about screening
In the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s September 22, 2026, summary of U.S. Preventive Services Task Force guidance recommends a mammogram every two years for women aged 40–74 at average risk. People at higher-than-average risk may need a different approach, so an individual schedule should be discussed with a healthcare professional.

Screening can find breast cancer earlier, but it cannot prevent cancer and does not guarantee detection. The CDC also identifies potential harms: false-positive results, overdiagnosis, pain, radiation exposure, and false negatives. Knowles’s story illustrates why it can matter to follow up on an appointment, but it cannot determine the right schedule or expected result for another person.
The CDC reports that more than 99% of women whose breast cancer is found at an early, localized stage are alive five years after diagnosis. This is a population statistic, not a forecast for any particular patient.

Hatem Soliman, MD, a medical oncologist in Moffitt Cancer Center’s Breast Oncology Department, said in an April 23, 2025, statement: “Regular breast cancer screening remains one of our best tools to detect breast cancers while they are early stage and most curable with our current therapies.”
