Their best-known moment came at WrestleMania 23 in 2007, when Trump shaved McMahon’s head after a scripted match. Outside WWE, Linda McMahon has described the two men as friends with a business connection; her later political work is distinct from Vince McMahon’s documented role.
How did Trump and McMahon first become associated?
Their public business connection dates to Atlantic City. Trump Plaza hosted WrestleMania IV in 1988 and WrestleMania V in 1989. WWE describes Trump Plaza as the first venue to host consecutive WrestleManias. WWE’s profile of Donald Trump and its 2013 Hall of Fame announcement recount the events.

The connection was useful to both sides: Trump’s Atlantic City property hosted major wrestling events, while WWE gained access to a high-profile venue and a celebrity whose name and public image could help attract attention. WWE later presented Trump as a celebrity figure in its programming, blending that existing association with entertainment storylines.
What happened in the 2007 “Battle of the Billionaires”?
In February 2007, WWE announced that Trump had challenged McMahon to a hair-versus-hair match at WrestleMania 23, scheduled for April 1 in Detroit. WWE’s February 13 announcement set up the contest as part of the event’s entertainment storyline.

Trump backed Bobby Lashley, while McMahon backed Umaga. Lashley won. As stipulated by the storyline, Trump then shaved McMahon’s head in front of the audience. WWE’s 2013 announcement says more than 80,000 fans were present. WWE’s account of Trump’s induction and Linda McMahon’s 2018 CBS interview describe the episode.
The head-shaving was a staged wrestling payoff, not evidence that the two men were engaged in a real feud. Trump later called performing before the WrestleMania crowd “literally the thrill of a lifetime,” in WWE’s 2013 announcement.

Did Trump really buy Monday Night Raw?
No. WWE used a supposed purchase of Monday Night Raw as another on-screen business angle in 2009. In the story, Trump “purchased” the program and returned it to McMahon a week later. WWE’s profile and Hall of Fame announcement describe the episode with the transaction language in quotation marks; it should not be confused with a documented real acquisition.
Why did WWE induct Trump into its Hall of Fame?
WWE named Trump a celebrity inductee in 2013. The induction took place April 6 at Madison Square Garden. In the announcement, McMahon praised Trump’s celebrity value to the company: “Donald is a global icon whose status brought an unmatched level of publicity and grandeur to WWE.” The statement reflects McMahon’s public assessment of Trump’s promotional impact; it is not, by itself, evidence of the extent of their private friendship.

Were Trump and Vince McMahon really friends?
Linda McMahon has described them as friends whose relationship developed through business. In a 2018 CBS interview, she recalled Trump inviting Vince to a Rolling Stones concert and said, “We weren’t expecting that we were…building this business friendship with someone who was ultimately going to be president of the United States.” That is Linda’s account of their relationship; the available reporting does not establish a complete independent history of their private interactions.
Linda McMahon’s political support for Trump should be kept separate from Vince’s relationship with him. CBS reported that Linda contributed $6 million to a pro-Trump super PAC in 2016, citing OpenSecrets. The figure concerns Linda, not Vince, and CBS situated it in the 2016 campaign period. The Associated Press reported in 2024 on Linda’s subsequent political role, including service in Trump’s first administration and as co-chair of his 2024 transition team. Those activities document Linda’s political connection, not an equivalent role for Vince.
Quick Recap
What the public record shows—and what it does not
- Public business and event ties: Trump Plaza hosted WrestleMania IV and V, and WWE later used Trump’s celebrity in its public promotions.
- Scripted performance: The 2007 hair match and 2009 Raw “purchase” were WWE storylines, not proof of an actual feud or sale.
- Reported personal connection: Linda McMahon characterized the men as friends with a business connection; that account should be attributed to her.
- Political ties: The campaign contribution and government roles cited here belong to Linda McMahon. They should not be attributed to Vince.
