In May 2026, it said its ad-supported service reached more than 250 million Monthly Active Viewers worldwide. That is a measure of potential audience reach—not a count of subscribing households or a before-and-after measure of ads per person. Netflix says it is testing ad loads that change with viewing behavior, alongside frequency caps.
Is Netflix showing more ads now?
There is clear evidence that Netflix is expanding its advertising business and the audience advertisers can reach. There is not, however, a published universal before-and-after figure showing that viewers across the service now get more ads per hour. A larger ad-supported audience creates more potential ad inventory; it does not by itself establish that each person experiences more interruptions.
Netflix President of Advertising Amy Reinhard said in May 2026 that the company was “testing new personalized ad loads and frequency caps that dynamically adjust the ads our members see, based on their viewing behaviors.” That describes experimentation, not a confirmed uniform change to every account.
What Netflix’s growth figures actually measure
Netflix reported more than 250 million global Monthly Active Viewers in May 2026, up from more than 190 million when it introduced that metric in November 2025. Netflix defines Monthly Active Viewers (MAV) by taking members who watched at least one minute of Netflix ads during the month and multiplying by its estimate of the average number of people in a household. MAV is therefore an estimated viewer-reach measure, not a count of ad-plan subscriptions.

Those figures should not be treated as a precise count of people, nor as a measure of how many ads an individual watches. Netflix’s earlier May 2025 announcement reported more than 94 million monthly active users. That older account/profile-based measure did not count all the people watching in a room and is not directly comparable with the later MAV figures. The closer comparison is 190 million to 250 million MAV, both rounded company-reported figures from different dates.
Netflix also said in May 2026 that more than 80% of its ads members actively watched every week. In May 2025, it reported an average of 41 hours per month spent on Netflix by US ads members. Neither figure establishes how many ads each viewer sees.

Why Netflix’s ad business is expanding
The company’s business indicators show growing advertiser demand and wider use of the ad-supported plan. In its April 2026 shareholder letter, Netflix reported more than 4,000 advertising clients, up 70% year over year. It said the ads plan accounted for more than 60% of sign-ups in countries where it was available during Q1 2026.
Netflix projected about $3 billion in advertising revenue for 2026, roughly double its 2025 total. That is a forecast issued in April 2026, not finalized 2026 revenue. The company has identified growth in ad-plan members, improving the share of available advertising slots it sells (fill rates), and maintaining CPMs—the price advertisers pay per thousand impressions—as drivers of longer-term ad revenue.

More places and formats to sell
Netflix said video podcasts arrived earlier in 2026 and vertical videos were available on mobile. It plans to make advertising inventory across podcasts and vertical video globally available in 2027. The company has also said its Netflix Ads Suite, its in-house ad technology, was implemented in all 12 countries that then offered the ad-supported plan. These developments expand the ways Netflix can sell advertising, but do not establish a fixed increase in commercial breaks for subscribers.
As of 2026, Netflix listed the ad-supported plan in Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, South Korea, Spain, the UK and the US. It announced plans to add Austria, Belgium, Colombia, Denmark, Indonesia, Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Peru, the Philippines, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland and Thailand in 2027. Announced expansion is not a guarantee that the plan is already available in a particular country; check Netflix’s current local offering.

How many ads do you get on Netflix per hour?
Netflix’s Help Center says viewers on an ad-supported experience can expect “a few short ads per hour.” The exact amount varies. Ads may run before or during select shows and movies, with breaks generally placed at natural plot breaks. Some new movies may have ads only before the movie begins.
During playback, the progress bar indicates upcoming breaks; when a break starts, the player shows how many ads are in it. Ads within shows and movies cannot be skipped or fast-forwarded, though you can pause playback during an ad.

Does Netflix show ads on ad-free plans?
Netflix says regular commercial breaks in shows and movies are not part of its ad-free experiences. Live events and special events are an exception: they may contain commercial breaks across all plans. Netflix says breaks are removed for ad-free experiences after a live event, although short post-event ads can sometimes appear and may be fast-forwarded.
What else can affect the ad experience?
- Title licensing: A small number of titles are unavailable on ad-supported experiences because of licensing restrictions.
- Device compatibility: Some devices may not support the plan if their software cannot be updated.
- Ad selection: Netflix may choose ads using interactions with Netflix, general location and information you provide. Unless you opt out, it may also use activity or interactions with unaffiliated third-party apps and websites for behavioral advertising. Opting out changes the information used to select ads; it does not remove ads.
- Profiles and games: Netflix says ads are not currently shown on Kids profiles or in Netflix games.
Whether an ad-supported plan is a good fit depends on its current price in your country, the interruptions you are willing to accept, whether your preferred titles are available, and whether your device is compatible. Prices and plan names vary by country and can change, so check Netflix’s local plan details rather than relying on a global price.
