In a pre-premiere interview published September 23, 2024, The Simpsons co-showrunner Matt Selman described the Season 36 opener as an experimental episode. Its apparent farewell to the series was a self-aware fiction within the story, not a cancellation announcement.
What Matt Selman said about “Bart’s Birthday”
In his September 23, 2024 interview with Animation Scoop, interviewer Jackson Murphy asked Selman about the new season, the show’s longevity, its first New York Comic Con panel, and upcoming Disney+ work. The interview identifies Selman as a co-showrunner, executive producer, and writer, and notes that it was edited for length and clarity.
Asked about the Season 36 premiere, Selman placed it among the show’s more unconventional recent episodes: “If you like the more experimental episodes we’ve been doing lately, like ‘Lisa The Boy Scout’ and some of the crazier ones, this would fall into that category.”
That description fits the episode’s central gag: it plays with the idea of a definitive ending while making the supposed finale part of its own story. A contemporary report by TheWrap described the invented “Hack-GPT” device as the mechanism behind the fake-finale setup. The framing was deliberate misdirection, not evidence that the long-running series had been canceled.

What happens in the Season 36 premiere?
FOX titled the episode “Bart’s Birthday.” Its season announcement described Bart celebrating a shocking birthday party that could change Springfield. Selman also called attention to the episode’s guest appearances, naming Tom Hanks, Conan O’Brien, John Cena, and Danny DeVito in the interview.
The episode’s fake-ending premise should be distinguished from the broadcast facts: FOX presented “Bart’s Birthday” as the start of Season 36, and its contemporaneous schedule listed the premiere for Sunday, September 29, 2024, at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT.

Why the fake finale is part of the joke
The story uses the anxiety around ending a cultural institution as material for an episode. In a later TV Insider report published December 31, 2024, Selman was quoted in comments he had given to the New York Post: “The discussion that it would be so hard to do a last episode is what led to the fake series finale. That it’s sort of an impossible thing.” The remark helps explain the conceit: rather than announce a genuine last episode, the show turns the challenge of imagining one into a meta plot device.
One other detail from Selman’s interview
Murphy also asked about a later Christmas installment planned for Disney+. Selman corrected the description of it as a two-parter: “One little correction is that it’s not a two-parter. It’s a double-size episode, but it’s not a two-parter.” He said it was designed as one story for Disney+ and was set to premiere December 17, the 35th anniversary of the original Christmas special. That was a separate streaming project, not part of the September 29 broadcast premiere.
