What is The Sympathizer about?
The series adapts Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. Its central character is a half-French, half-Vietnamese communist spy whose espionage continues from the final days of the Vietnam War into his life as a refugee in Los Angeles. Park Chan-wook’s stated rationale, as reported by TIME, was to have one actor embody several white American characters so audiences would see how their power systems overlap. That is the director’s interpretation of the casting, not a neutral description of every character’s role in the story. The conceit also gives the trailer a visual through-line: the same performer appears in separate positions of influence.

What kind of series is it, and who made it?
The Sympathizer is a seven-episode limited series. Park Chan-wook and Don McKellar are its co-showrunners and executive producers. Sky Group’s March 28, 2024 announcement credits Fernando Meirelles with directing episode four and Marc Munden with directing episodes five through seven. The series is a 2024 title directed by Park, according to A24.
Where can you watch The Sympathizer?
A24’s title page links to Max. Sky Group’s March 28, 2024 announcement said the seven episodes would debut in May on Sky Atlantic and NOW in the UK. That announcement describes the UK release at that time, not guaranteed present-day availability. Streaming rights vary by territory and can change, so check the service listings where you live.
