Bridgerton Season 4 Part 1 gives Benedict and Sophie a promising romantic setup, but its four episodes also lean on the series’ familiar courtship formula. Netflix released the first half on January 29, 2026; the second half arrived February 26, completing the eight-episode season. This review covers Part 1 only.
What happens in Bridgerton Season 4 Part 1?
The season centers on Benedict Bridgerton, played by Luke Thompson, and Sophie Baek, played by Yerin Ha. At Lady Violet Bridgerton’s masquerade, Benedict is captivated by a mysterious woman known as the Lady in Silver. He is left with her satin glove and sets out to discover who she is; Sophie is the woman behind the mystery. That pursuit gives the opening installment its romantic engine.
Netflix says the season adapts Julia Quinn’s third Bridgerton novel, An Offer from a Gentleman. Part 1 consists of “The Waltz,” “Time Transfixed,” “The Field Next to the Other Road,” and “An Offer from a Gentleman.” Netflix’s Season 4 guide outlines the premise and episode titles.
Does the familiar Bridgerton formula still work?
Part 1 returns to the series’ recognizable blend of romantic longing, social maneuvering and lavish Regency spectacle. That familiarity can be part of the pleasure: the masquerade gives the season an instantly legible fairy-tale hook, while the search for the Lady in Silver supplies a clear question to carry forward. The trade-off is that the setup feels less like a reinvention than a variation on a well-established pattern.

TechRadar’s review, published January 29, described the opening episodes as having an “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” energy. That is one outlet’s assessment, rather than a measure of critical consensus. Its review also found the central romance charming while arguing that Benedict is not the most compelling focus of this installment. Read TechRadar’s review.
How do Benedict and Sophie work as the central couple?
Their first connection is built around a deliberate gap in knowledge: Benedict knows the Lady in Silver as an enchanting stranger, while the audience knows Sophie’s identity. That dramatic irony makes the glove and the search more than decorative details; they put the season’s romantic ideal alongside the question of who Sophie is when she is not being seen through Benedict’s fascination.

The pairing’s potential lies in the distance between their worlds. Benedict belongs to an aristocratic family, while Sophie is introduced as a maid. That difference creates a meaningful source of tension for a romance, though the premise alone does not establish how fully Part 1 develops its consequences. The opening four episodes set the conflict in motion; viewers looking for a complete resolution will need the second half.
What does the split release mean for Part 1’s story?
Netflix divided the eight-episode season into two four-episode parts: Part 1 premiered January 29, 2026, and Part 2 premiered February 26, 2026. Shondaland likewise identifies the January installment as the season’s first four episodes. Shondaland’s release announcement confirms the split.

As a result, Part 1 works as an opening movement rather than a standalone romantic arc. Its central mystery and social contrast can build anticipation, but the break also postpones the payoff. Whether the pause feels like useful suspense or an interruption depends on how much of the story a viewer wants resolved in one sitting; the January release does not contain the season’s final chapter.

If the masquerade-and-mystery premise appeals to you, Part 1 offers a straightforward entry into Benedict and Sophie’s story, with the understanding that it is only half a season. Readers who want to compare the adaptation with its source can start with Julia Quinn’s An Offer from a Gentleman, the novel Netflix identifies as the basis for Season 4. The available evidence establishes the adaptation relationship, but not a scene-by-scene comparison.
