He reached the judges’ houses that first time, returned two years later, and then became one of five solo contestants the judges brought together as One Direction. The group finished third in the 2010 competition.
Watch the footage: first audition, return and group formation
ITV’s archival pointers include official X Factor footage of Payne’s 2010 audition, early moments with One Direction, and another group performance. These are different parts of the story: the widely circulated full-version audition is his 2010 return, not his first appearance in 2008. ITV This Morning’s video guide points viewers to the official clips.
The official X Factor UK video, “Liam Payne’s X Factor Audition (Full Version)”, is specifically the 2010 audition. Its description looks back at his earlier attempt; it is not a recording of the 2008 audition itself.
2008: Payne auditioned at 14 and reached the judges’ houses
Payne first appeared on The X Factor in 2008, aged 14. ITV reports that he advanced to the judges’ houses stage. The official X Factor UK video description says he reached Simon Cowell’s house in Barbados, where Cowell believed he was not ready for the competition. Payne did not win that season, and the available source descriptions do not identify the song he sang in 2008.

That distinction matters when looking up “Liam Payne at 14 on The X Factor”: the 2008 appearance was an earlier, substantial run through the competition, not the later audition that led to One Direction. ITV News’ account of Payne’s first appearance and return dates the two auditions and describes his progress.
2010: He returned as a solo contestant
Two years after his first appearance, Payne came back to audition again. ITV says Cowell had asked him to return; the official 2010 video presents the audition as a chance to show how he had improved. The video’s description characterizes Cowell’s earlier view this way: “Simon believed he wasn’t ready for the competition.” That is the channel’s summary of Cowell’s position, not a direct quotation from Cowell.

Payne later described the return promise from his own perspective. As quoted by ITV, he said: “From what I’ve heard part of the reason One Direction was made was because of Simon’s promise to me. That in two years I’ll make this work for you.” This is Payne’s reported recollection; it does not establish that the group’s formation had been planned in advance. ITV News’ report on released formation footage recounts his comment alongside its account of how the judges assembled the group.
How five solo auditions became One Direction
Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson entered the 2010 series as separate solo contestants. During the competition, the judges considered combining them. ITV’s report on footage of that decision says Nicole Scherzinger suggested imagining them as a boy band. She described the potential she saw: “They’re just too talented to get rid of. They’ve got the right look and charisma on stage. I think they’ll be really great in a boyband.”

ITV also reports that the judges saw leadership potential in Payne, based on his audition and confidence. The group’s formation was therefore a later step in the series, distinct from Payne’s solo return audition. The official footage includes early moments together as a group and another performance; the available descriptions do not establish which clip is their first performance together.

One Direction placed third in the 2010 series; the group did not win. The result came after the judges’ decision to form a group from five solo contestants. The final drew 17 million UK viewers, according to the Associated Press—an audience figure for the UK final, not a measure of One Direction’s audience alone. AP reports that the band went on to release five studio albums and sell 70 million records before announcing an indefinite hiatus in 2016. The Associated Press report provides that later context.
