This is an editorial ranking of American football—gridiron—films, not association football (soccer). It weighs filmmaking, football’s role in the story, performances, cultural staying power and variety; no single list establishes a definitive all-time order.
How this ranking works
The ten picks span high school, college and professional football, and include documentary, drama, comedy and tragedy. The aim is not to rank films by a single score: Rotten Tomatoes’ September 2026 guide orders titles by Tomatometer, while NFL.com offers a separate editorial list. Neither represents a universal consensus. Rotten Tomatoes’ football movies guide and NFL.com’s list are useful companion views.

The 10 best American football movies
1. Friday Night Lights (2004)
Peter Berg’s film follows Permian High School’s football team in Odessa, Texas, where the pressure around a season reaches well beyond the field. It earns the top spot for its unsentimental view of football as both a game and a community’s shared obsession. The result is a tense sports drama that makes room for players’ lives without pretending that winning solves everything. USA Football identifies it as an adaptation of H. G. Bissinger’s novel, Friday Night Lights.
2. Undefeated (2011)
This documentary follows the Manassas High School team in North Memphis as it tries to win a playoff game. Its documentary form gives the stakes a different texture from a scripted underdog story: the film observes a real team and community rather than arranging events around a fictional hero. Rotten Tomatoes’ September 2026 guide reported a 96% Tomatometer and 89% Popcornmeter for the film; those are dated site scores, not permanent measures of quality. Rotten Tomatoes’ film page.

3. Remember the Titans (2000)
Set in Alexandria, Virginia, in 1971, the film centers on coaches Herman Boone and Bill Yoast and a high-school team navigating racial integration. D23 describes it as based on the T. C. Williams High School football team. Its appeal lies in the combination of team drama, recognizable performances and a clear emotional arc, though it is a dramatized film rather than a documentary. 4. Rudy (1993)
Daniel “Rudy” Ruettiger’s determination to play football at Notre Dame anchors one of the genre’s most enduring underdog dramas. Its emotional power comes from persistence more than sporting dominance. The film also takes liberties with the history: NFL.com notes that Rudy’s sack and being carried off the field happened, but players did not turn in their jerseys before the Georgia Tech game as shown. Rank #2
5. Brian’s Song (1971)
This intimate drama about Chicago Bears teammates Brian Piccolo and Gale Sayers puts friendship and illness ahead of game strategy. It is one of the list’s strongest choices when the reader wants a football film whose emotional center is personal rather than competitive. The sport supplies the setting; the relationship supplies the story.
6. Any Given Sunday (1999)
Oliver Stone’s professional-football drama turns its attention to the machinery around the game: coaches, players, injuries, egos and the pressures of running a team. Its sprawling, high-energy style makes it a sharp contrast to the intimate high-school stories higher on this list. Choose it for football’s business and power struggles as much as for the action.

7. The Waterboy (1998)
This broad comedy makes an unlikely college player its central joke and its underdog hero. It is a deliberately silly pick in a list otherwise weighted toward drama, but football comedies are part of the genre’s range. It works best for viewers looking for an easygoing change of tone, not realism or detailed strategy.
8. We Are Marshall (2006)
Based on the aftermath of the 1970 plane crash that killed members of Marshall University’s football team and staff, this drama follows a community trying to rebuild. Its focus is grief, memory and the effort to bring a team back, making it a more solemn choice than a conventional triumph-on-the-field film.

9. North Dallas Forty (1979)
This professional-football satire offers a more critical view of the sport, including the pressures placed on players and the institution surrounding them. It broadens the ranking beyond inspiration and nostalgia: football can also be a workplace shaped by money, power and physical cost. NFL.com includes it among notable football films.
10. The Blind Side (2009)
This drama follows Michael Oher’s rise to football prominence and the family who supports him. Its football story is intertwined with questions of opportunity, family and how a life is represented on screen. It rounds out the list as a widely recognized contemporary sports drama, though viewers should approach it as a dramatization, not a documentary account.

What to know about truth and availability
These films make different claims on reality. Undefeated is a documentary; Friday Night Lights adapts Bissinger’s book; Remember the Titans is based on a real team but dramatizes its story; and Rudy alters at least one specific pregame detail. Treating all of them as equivalent true stories would blur important distinctions.
Streaming and purchase options change by region and date. JustWatch’s U.S. listings checked October 3, 2026, showed DVD purchase listings for Remember the Titans and DVD/Blu-ray choices for Rudy; those listings do not establish current streaming availability or availability elsewhere. JustWatch: Remember the Titans and JustWatch: Rudy. D23 reported Remember the Titans on Disney+ in September 2025, but that historical note is not a current availability check.
