Online jokes about “bullet wounds” and insurance coverage followed the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York on December 4, 2024. The humor was aimed largely at anger and distrust toward health insurers—but those reactions do not establish why Thompson was killed or amount to evidence of a motive.

What happened, and what the headline’s joke means

Futurism’s December 4, 2024, article about the online reaction used the line, “Our apologies, but bullet wounds are only covered under our platinum+ package.” It imitates the language of insurance plans to make a bitter joke about what people see as the distance between paying for coverage and getting care. It is a satirical line, not a real benefit or coverage term.

Thompson, UnitedHealthcare’s CEO, was fatally shot outside a Midtown Manhattan hotel that morning. In contemporaneous reporting, Futurism quoted NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch saying, “I want to be clear at this time, every indication is that this was a premeditated, preplanned, targeted attack.” That was a police characterization reported at the time, not a court finding or an account of the case’s current status.

Other posts parodied insurer procedures with phrases such as “thoughts and prior authorizations!” The jokes transformed familiar complaints about costs, denials, and paperwork into a grim commentary on the shooting. They help explain the tone of the reaction; they do not verify a motive.

Why anger at insurance became part of the reaction

The response reflected a wider contradiction in how people experience health coverage: many give their insurance a favorable overall rating, while also encountering obstacles when they try to use it. The Associated Press summarized KFF polling showing that most insured adults rated their insurance excellent or good in a 2023 survey, while a majority said they had experienced a problem using it in the prior year. AP also reported that about two-thirds of Americans said health insurance companies deserve “a lot of blame” for high health care costs; the AP passage does not specify the poll year.

Those findings describe public attitudes and reported experiences, not every patient’s situation or the facts of any individual claim. Later, KFF Health News reported on patients facing insurance denials despite policy changes, including disputes and appeals. That reporting offers context for persistent frustration, but it does not establish that a particular claim was wrongly denied or explain the killing.

What “Delay, Deny, Defend” does—and does not—tell us

“Delay, deny, defend” is a phrase used by critics of insurers’ handling of claims. AP reported that it is also the title of a 2010 book critical of the industry, and that the phrase appeared in discussion after the shooting. Some online commenters connected it to wording reportedly found on ammunition, but AP said police had not officially commented on a connection between that wording and motive.

The distinction matters: a phrase can become a powerful symbol in public debate without proving who used it, what they meant, or why a crime occurred. Anger at insurance practices, jokes about that anger, and verified findings by investigators or a court are separate things.

Gallows humor is not the same as an endorsement of violence

Futurism described a mix of gallows humor, indifference, and anger at perceived failures of private insurance. Some posts celebrated or appeared to welcome the killing; others used irony to criticize the health care system. Neither a viral joke nor a collection of social-media posts can be treated as representative of the public as a whole.

One user quoted by Futurism wrote: “All human life is sacred, so it’s not proper to laugh when serious harm befalls someone. The moral thing to do is instead charge them hundreds of thousands of dollars.” The joke turns a moral rebuke into criticism of medical costs. It is one person’s post, not an authoritative statement or proof that everyone reacting online shared the same view.

What the coverage can establish

  • Futurism’s headline and jokes document a dark online reaction to Thompson’s killing and connect it to frustration with insurance.
  • AP’s reporting records the “thoughts and prior authorizations” wording and the discussion of “delay, deny, defend,” while noting that police had not officially linked ammunition wording to motive.
  • KFF polling, as summarized by AP, shows that positive overall ratings for insurance can coexist with reported problems using it.
  • Neither public anger, a social-media interpretation, nor a slogan establishes the reason for the killing.
