Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2 was pulled from its planned August 16, 2024 U.S. theatrical release. The distributor said it wanted audiences to have more time to discover Chapter 1. Chapter 2 later screened at the Venice Film Festival, but that was not a general release. As of the latest report cited here, published May 25, 2026, no commercial release date had been announced; the available sources do not establish that the film has been canceled.
Why was Chapter 2 delayed?
Chapter 1 opened in June 2024, and Chapter 2 was initially scheduled to follow on August 16. On July 10, Territory Pictures and New Line Cinema withdrew that date. A New Line spokesperson told ABC News the companies wanted to give viewers more time to discover the first film, including through premium video on demand (PVOD) and Max. The announcement did not include a new date.
Chapter 1’s box-office performance was widely discussed in coverage of the decision, but the distributor’s stated explanation was to give the first installment a longer opportunity to find an audience. The announcement itself does not establish any other explanation.

Has Chapter 2 been released?
It has screened at a film festival, but that is not the same as a public commercial release. The 2024 Venice Film Festival program included Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2 in its out-of-competition selection. A festival screening does not establish that the film received a regular theatrical run or became available on streaming or home video.
The official Venice program lists the film and includes a director’s statement.

When is it coming out?
No confirmed commercial release date is established in the sources cited here. A report published May 25, 2026 said no date had been set. That is a status report, not an announcement that the film will never be released. No platform, format, or future year should be treated as confirmed on this evidence.

What was the plan for the larger saga?
Costner described Horizon as a four-film project. In his statement on the Venice program, he said that he and John Baird had grown it into “a four-film saga.” In an Associated Press interview on May 19, 2024, Costner said the studio wanted to release the first two installments close together, and that he expected a pace of “every four or five months.”

That interview also gives a snapshot of the work on Chapter 3 at the time, not a current schedule: Costner said he had shot three days and still had to press for money to finish it. Those May 2024 remarks do not confirm the project’s present financing, production status, or release plans.

What “delayed” means here
The confirmed change is specific: the August 16, 2024 U.S. theatrical date was withdrawn, and no replacement commercial date is established by the cited sources. Venice showed the film to a festival audience, but did not amount to the postponed general release. There is no official cancellation announcement in these sources.
