What the White Stripes alleged
The complaint, filed September 9, 2024, in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, named Trump, Donald J. Trump for President 2024, Inc., and campaign communications staffer Margo McAtee Martin as defendants. The filing said a video showing Trump boarding an aircraft, captioned as his departure for Michigan and Wisconsin, was posted on X and Instagram with the recognizable opening riff of “Seven Nation Army.” Jack and Meg White alleged they had neither known of nor consented to the use. The complaint described the use as a “flagrant misappropriation.” Its introduction said the suit sought redress for a presidential candidate’s “flagrant misappropriation” of the song’s composition and recording. That language expresses the plaintiffs’ position; the court did not adopt it as a ruling.

Why the complaint distinguished the song from its recording
Copyright can protect the musical composition and a particular sound recording as separate works. The complaint identified Jack White as the composer and said the pair recorded “Seven Nation Army” in 2003. It identified separate registrations for the composition and the recording, each effective March 29, 2004. The suit therefore alleged infringement of both works, rather than treating the song as a single undifferentiated copyright. Complaint; Justia’s legal summary.
Across those two works, the plaintiffs pleaded direct, contributory, and vicarious copyright infringement—six theories in total. Pleading those causes of action gave the court claims to consider; it did not prove liability.

What the plaintiffs asked the court to do
The complaint requested declaratory, injunctive, and equitable relief, an accounting, damages, interest, costs, and attorney’s fees. Those were requests, not awards. The available case record does not show that the court granted damages or an injunction. Complaint; Case materials.
How the lawsuit ended
On November 10, 2024, the White Stripes filed a notice voluntarily dismissing all claims against all three defendants without prejudice. Dismissal notice. “Without prejudice” means that the notice itself did not dismiss the claims with prejudice; it does not establish that the plaintiffs later refiled.

A docket tracker updated July 31, 2026 records the case as terminated on July 17, 2025, and lists it as closed. Docket record. The reviewed record shows no merits decision on the infringement allegations. The procedural outcome should therefore be described as a voluntary dismissal followed by case termination—not a court finding for either side, a settlement, or a judicial exoneration.
