What did IF earn on opening weekend?
In its May 19, 2024 report, the Associated Press said IF claimed the North American top spot with an estimated $35 million opening. The studio estimate covered the weekend of May 17–19. Box Office Mojo’s later title record lists a domestic opening of $33,715,801. The AP figure was an early estimate; the database figure is a later recorded amount. AP’s opening-weekend report and Box Office Mojo’s title record therefore use figures that should not be treated as competing measurements from the same reporting moment.

Opening weekend was only part of the film’s box-office run
Box Office Mojo lists cumulative grosses of $111,375,918 domestically and $79,159,790 internationally, for a worldwide total of $190,535,708. These are later lifetime totals in the database, not opening-weekend results. The AP also estimated that the film made about $20 million in 56 international markets during its opening weekend, bringing the estimated worldwide opening to about $55 million. These were May 2024 estimates, distinct from the later cumulative worldwide total. Associated Press
How did the opening compare with expectations?
TheWrap reported that IF had been projected to open around $40 million. It compared the studio-estimated $35 million North American debut with the $29.6 million opening for Elemental and $37.5 million for Hop. What the 2024 reception reports do—and do not—show
In the AP report, Paramount’s head of domestic distribution Chris Aronson said, “Families came out in force and they loved the film.” That is a studio executive’s characterization of audience response, not an independent attendance measure. The same report said the film received an A CinemaScore and that its Rotten Tomatoes critics’ score was 49% at the time of publication; both are dated indicators, separate from its No. 1 box-office ranking.
