Sarah Michelle Gellar remembered her late Buffy the Vampire Slayer co-star Michelle Trachtenberg on Instagram on February 27, 2025, sharing photos of the pair and adapting words associated with the series’ fifth-season finale: “Michelle, listen to me. Listen. I love you. I will always love you. The hardest thing in this world, is to live in it. I will be brave. I will live… for you.”
What Gellar wrote in her tribute
Gellar posted the tribute the day after news of Trachtenberg’s death. Alongside photographs of the two actors, she addressed Trachtenberg directly and promised to be brave and live for her. ABC News described the caption as a twist on a beloved Buffy quote; TheWrap identified its reference as the season five finale, “The Gift,” season 5, episode 22.
Gellar’s wording is an adaptation of language associated with the episode, not an unchanged quotation from the script. That shift made the familiar sentiment feel personal: the words were directed to Trachtenberg as a friend and former co-star.
Why the reference mattered to Buffy viewers
Trachtenberg played Dawn Summers, the younger sister of Gellar’s Buffy Summers, from 2000 to 2003. Dawn’s place in the series made the two characters’ relationship central to the show’s emotional story, giving Gellar’s direct address an added resonance for viewers who remembered them as sisters on screen.
