There is no verified public roster that establishes where every person who survived the 1993 Battle of Mogadishu is today. Among the people whose later lives have been publicly documented, Michael Durant survived the crash and captivity; a 2025 report identified Brad Thomas as a musician and Tom Slattery as a leader of a foundation serving special operations families. Gary Gordon and Randall Shughart, often closely associated with Durant’s story, were killed defending the crash site.
Who counts as a Black Hawk Down survivor?
The phrase can refer either to people who lived through a particular helicopter crash or, more broadly, to U.S. personnel who survived the Battle of Mogadishu in October 1993. Those are not interchangeable groups. The accounts available here document selected individuals rather than a complete roster, so they cannot establish every survivor’s present-day whereabouts.
Michael Durant was the pilot of the Black Hawk whose crash brought Gary Gordon and Randall Shughart to the site. The U.S. Department of Defense account says Durant was released about two weeks after his capture; the Army account describes his captivity as 11 days. Those are the respective sources’ descriptions, not a single reconciled duration. Department of Defense account; Army account.
What happened to Michael Durant after Black Hawk Down?
Durant survived the crash, was captured, and was later released. Official Army and Department of Veterans Affairs profiles recount his survival, captivity, recovery, and later public retelling of the experience. The Army profile, published in 2013, describes him speaking publicly and running a service-disabled veteran-owned small business in that period. That is a dated snapshot, not confirmation of his occupation today.

What are Brad Thomas and Tom Slattery doing?
TIME’s February 10, 2025 report identifies two other battle survivors and describes their work at the time of publication. These are dated reports, not guarantees that either person’s role remains unchanged.
| Person | Reported role in TIME’s February 10, 2025 coverage |
|---|---|
| Brad Thomas | Musician who contributes royalties to charitable organizations helping first responders in need. |
| Tom Slattery | CEO and co-founder of All Secure Foundation, which helps special operations families. |
TIME’s report also includes Somali perspectives and notes that the Somali death toll has not been finalized. It gives an estimate of around 200 Somali deaths; that is a reported estimate, not a settled count.

Did Gary Gordon and Randall Shughart survive?
No. Gordon and Shughart volunteered to defend Durant’s crash site, reached the aircraft, and helped him, but both were killed in the fighting. They received the Medal of Honor posthumously. The Department of Defense reproduces their citation’s description that they “died in the most courageous and selfless way any human being can act.” Department of Defense account; Army account.
In 2025, Fort Gordon was dedicated in honor of Gordon. The Army’s coverage of the dedication documents that commemoration; it does not change the fact that Gordon was killed in 1993.

Why there is no single answer for every survivor
Official historical profiles establish important details about Durant, Gordon, and Shughart, while the later-life information for Thomas and Slattery comes from TIME’s 2025 reporting. The available public information is uneven and does not provide a comprehensive, verified account of all surviving participants’ current lives. It therefore would be misleading to claim that everyone involved stayed in military service, entered government work, or has a particular job today.
