New York magazine and Olivia Nuzzi agreed to part ways on October 21, 2024, after the magazine’s third-party review found no inaccuracies or evidence of bias in her 2024 campaign reporting. That finding addressed her published work—not the separate disclosure issue: the magazine had said her undisclosed personal relationship with a former subject violated its standards on conflicts of interest and disclosures.
What happened
On September 19, 2024, New York magazine said Nuzzi had acknowledged a personal relationship with a former subject relevant to the 2024 campaign while she was reporting on the campaign. The magazine said the relationship violated its standards on conflicts of interest and disclosures, and that it would not have allowed her to continue covering the campaign had it known. It placed her on leave. The magazine’s September statement said an initial internal review found no inaccuracies or evidence of bias and that a more thorough review by an outside firm was underway.
On October 21, the magazine said it had engaged Davis Wright Tremaine to review Nuzzi’s 2024 campaign work. The firm reached the same conclusion as the initial internal review: it found no inaccuracies or evidence of bias. The magazine then announced that it and Nuzzi had agreed to part ways, praising her work over nearly eight years as its Washington correspondent and wishing her well. Its wording was that “the best course forward is to part ways”; it did not describe the decision as a firing. Read the October 21 update.
What the review did—and did not—establish
Published work
The magazine reported that both its internal review and the third-party review found no inaccuracies or evidence of bias in Nuzzi’s 2024 campaign work. That is the finding the magazine attributed to the reviews.

Disclosure and conflict of interest
The review’s reported conclusion did not reverse the magazine’s separate position that the undisclosed relationship violated its conflict-of-interest and disclosure standards. The magazine said it would not have permitted Nuzzi to continue covering the campaign had it known. Accuracy and bias in published work are distinct questions from whether a journalist disclosed a relationship that could create a conflict or appear to do so.
What Nuzzi said about the relationship
As reported by the Associated Press, Nuzzi said communication with a former reporting subject turned personal earlier in 2024. She said she did not directly report on that person or use them as a source during the period she described. Nuzzi characterized the relationship as never physical, said it should have been disclosed to prevent the appearance of a conflict, and apologized. Those are Nuzzi’s statements about her own conduct, not independent findings by the magazine’s review. The AP report summarizes her account.

What was publicly established about RFK Jr.
New York magazine’s statements referred to a “former subject” without naming that person. The AP reported that Status and The New York Times identified Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as the subject based on unnamed sources. AP also reported that Nuzzi had not confirmed Kennedy’s involvement and that Kennedy said he had met her once. The identification therefore should be understood as reporting attributed to those outlets, not as a confirmation by Nuzzi or the magazine.

Nuzzi’s attorney, Ari Wilkenfeld, said she was gratified that two investigations had found her campaign reporting sound and that she had done nothing wrong. That was the attorney’s characterization of the findings; it is separate from the magazine’s statement that the undisclosed relationship violated its standards. Vanity Fair reported the attorney’s response.
