Royal corgis entered the family in 1933, but the line associated with Queen Elizabeth II began with Susan, the puppy she received for her eighteenth birthday in 1944. Royal Collection Trust says Elizabeth II’s corgis thereafter descended from Susan. This is a timeline of the documented milestones—not a complete list of every dog or a year-by-year account.
How the royal corgis began
1933: Dookie and Jane join the family
The Duke and Duchess of York acquired Dookie and Jane for their daughters, Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret. Royal Collection Trust describes them as the first corgis to join the royal family. They were family dogs, not the same as Susan, the later starting point of Elizabeth II’s corgi line. Susan and the line that followed
1944: Susan is Elizabeth’s birthday gift
For her eighteenth birthday, Princess Elizabeth received Susan. The Royal Family identifies Susan as the birthday present, while Royal Collection Trust names her as the ancestor of Elizabeth II’s later corgis. The Royal Family’s account of the Queen’s corgis
30 May 1944: A photograph at Windsor Castle
A photograph taken at Windsor Castle on 30 May 1944 shows Princess Elizabeth with Susan as a puppy, according to the Wallace Collection’s release for its 2023 display. The dated image provides a glimpse of the pair soon after Susan entered Elizabeth’s life. Wallace Collection display release

What the later royal corgi story establishes
Royal Collection Trust says Elizabeth II’s corgis thereafter descended from Susan. The Royal Family says she owned more than 30 corgis during her lifetime. That is an attributed, approximate lifetime count—not an exact total, and the cited pages do not name or date every dog.

The Royal Family’s hobbies page uses a broader figure, saying she had more than 30 corgis and dorgis. That combined wording includes dorgis, so it should not be used as a corgi-only count. The Royal Family’s hobbies page
