Marie Fratta, the winner of HGTV’s 2024 Dream Home sweepstakes, sold the prize home on Anastasia Island, Florida. The Florida Times-Union, part of the USA TODAY Network, reported that property records show a sale for $2 million on September 4, 2024. The home was listed about two months after HGTV announced Fratta as the winner. That establishes a recent sale, but not why she sold or how much she kept after costs.
What happened to the 2024 HGTV Dream Home?
HGTV announced Marie Fratta as the 2024 winner in a prize package valued at more than $2.2 million. That package included the furnished Anastasia Island home, a Mercedes-Benz and $100,000. The announced package value is not the home’s later sale price: the Florida Times-Union’s report says property records show the house sold for $2 million on September 4, 2024. HGTV’s winner announcement and the sale report establish the sequence.
The home was listed roughly two months after the winner announcement. The available reporting does not establish when Fratta received title, her reason for selling, or her net proceeds after taxes and other expenses.
Does this mean most winners sell?
Not necessarily. A historical summary citing 2005 reporting said that most Dream Home winners had sold their prizes and that only two had lived in their houses as of 2006. That is a dated snapshot, not a current percentage or a complete record of winners since then. The historical summary should be read with that cutoff in mind.

HGTV’s winners index names winners for recent years, including Fratta in 2024 and Tricia Smith in 2025, but does not track whether they kept the home, sold it, or chose a cash alternative. The sources available here therefore do not support a current tally.
Why might a winner sell rather than keep the home?
Winning a valuable property can bring substantial costs as well as a place to live. HGTV’s official 2026 rules say the winner is responsible for federal, state and local taxes on the prize and will receive a 1099 for its actual value. The rules also assign the winner transfer and recording taxes, closing costs, future real-estate taxes, title insurance, homeowner’s hazard and liability insurance, and other costs tied to receiving, owning and maintaining the home. Those are 2026 contest terms; they do not establish the tax bill or motive of a winner from an earlier year. Older reporting summarized in the historical account linked sales to property taxes and other bills. It also described 2005 winner Don Cruz selling after receiving tax forms that showed a higher-than-expected home value. That example comes through a secondary summary of older local reporting, so it is historical context rather than evidence about Fratta’s decision.

The 2026 rules distinguish the prize package’s stated value from the alternative of taking cash instead of the home. These terms apply to the 2026 giveaway and should not be assumed to match the terms offered in 2024 or earlier years.

| 2026 choice or figure | What it means |
|---|---|
| Home and $100,000 cash prize | HGTV lists the grand prize’s approximate retail value as $2,448,933. The rules say the home’s actual value may vary with market fluctuations. |
| $750,000 cash option plus the $100,000 cash prize | The stated alternative is $750,000 in place of the home and its contents, alongside the separate cash prize. |
These figures come from HGTV’s 2026 official rules. They are not a personalized comparison of after-tax value: the rules assign costs to the winner, and the sources here do not calculate what a particular winner would retain under either option.
