Pearl Jam’s principal drummers were Dave Krusen, Matt Chamberlain, Dave Abbruzzese, Jack Irons and Matt Cameron. Krusen recorded the band’s debut, Ten; Cameron joined in 1998 and announced his departure in July 2025 after 27 years. Their changes came about for different reasons, and the Associated Press reported that no successor had been named when Cameron’s departure was announced.
Who played drums in Pearl Jam?
The sequence runs from the band’s early years to Cameron’s departure: Krusen, Chamberlain, Abbruzzese, Irons and Cameron. They were not interchangeable stops in a single story: each played in a different phase of the band’s recording and touring history.
| Drummer | Pearl Jam period and recordings | Transition or later appearance |
|---|---|---|
| Dave Krusen | Early band; recorded Ten | Left in 1991; later performed with Pearl Jam in 2017 and 2022 |
| Matt Chamberlain | Touring drummer after the Ten sessions | Left for the Saturday Night Live house band; recommended Dave Abbruzzese |
| Dave Abbruzzese | Played on the Vs. and Vitalogy sessions and tours | Fired in August 1994 |
| Jack Irons | Played on No Code, Yield and Mirror Ball | Left in 1998, citing exhaustion and the demands of touring |
| Matt Cameron | Joined in 1998; first Pearl Jam studio album was Binaural (2000) | Announced his departure in July 2025 after 27 years |
The chronology and recording details are summarized in Rolling Stone Australia’s 2025 retrospective; Cameron’s start, studio debut and departure are also covered by the Associated Press.
Dave Krusen: the drummer on Ten
Krusen was with the group when Eddie Vedder first rehearsed with them in October 1990. He stayed through the first gig and early touring, and played on Pearl Jam’s debut album, Ten. He left after a show on May 25, 1991, following the wrap party for the film Singles. Rolling Stone Australia’s retrospective reports that Krusen had a severe drinking problem at the time; that personal context should not be mistaken for a complete account of the band’s later drummer changes.

Krusen returned to perform with Pearl Jam at the 2017 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction and at a 2022 show when Cameron had COVID-19. Looking back on the band’s early days in a 2017 interview quoted by Rolling Stone, Krusen recalled, “As soon as [Vedder] started singing I was struck by the uniqueness of his voice.”
Matt Chamberlain: a short touring bridge
After the Ten recording sessions, Chamberlain joined Pearl Jam for touring. His tenure was brief: he left after being offered a place in the Saturday Night Live house band. He recommended Abbruzzese as his replacement, linking the short touring stint to the next drummer in the lineup.

Dave Abbruzzese: the Vs. and Vitalogy years
Abbruzzese played on the Vs. and Vitalogy sessions and toured with Pearl Jam during that period. The retrospective describes conflict involving personality and the band’s direction; Stone Gossard fired him in August 1994. The available account does not support reducing the split to one simple motive.
Jack Irons: No Code, Yield and the road
Irons made his Pearl Jam debut at the 1994 Bridge School Benefit. He went on to play on No Code, Yield and Neil Young’s collaboration with Pearl Jam, Mirror Ball. He left in 1998, describing exhaustion and the strain of touring, including the difficulty of maintaining rest and recovery.

Matt Cameron: from 1998 to his 2025 departure
Pearl Jam brought Cameron in during 1998 as a temporary replacement for Irons ahead of a major tour. He became a long-term member, making his first studio album with the band Binaural in 2000. Pearl Jam’s official announcement also noted Cameron’s contribution to the band’s first demos in 1990 and his role in its live shows and studio recordings.
On July 7, 2025, Cameron announced that he was leaving. “After 27 fantastic years, I have taken my final steps down the drum riser for the mighty Pearl Jam,” he wrote, as quoted by the Associated Press. The band described his contribution as spanning the previous 27 years and called it an important chapter in the group’s history. Neither the AP report nor the band’s announcement gave a reason for his departure. The AP reported no replacement named at that time; those announcements do not establish a later successor’s status.

Why did Pearl Jam change drummers?
There was no single cause behind the changes. Krusen’s departure is reported in the context of his severe drinking problem; Chamberlain left for another job; Abbruzzese was dismissed amid tensions over personality and the band’s direction; Irons described exhaustion and the strain of touring. Cameron’s 2025 departure announcement did not state a reason. Treating all five transitions as one recurring dispute would flatten distinct circumstances that the accounts describe separately.
What the drummer timeline says about Pearl Jam
The lineup chronology also maps the band’s changing musical periods: Krusen on Ten, Abbruzzese through Vs. and Vitalogy, Irons on No Code and Yield, and Cameron from Binaural onward. Chamberlain’s role was principally a touring bridge after the debut sessions. The record supports a history of changing personnel and different circumstances, not an objective ranking of which drummer was best.
