Kelly Clarkson said the depression and other feelings that can accompany divorce or grief can be “extraordinarily hard,” and that songwriting gave her a healthy outlet while she processed her breakup from Brandon Blackstock. In a January 3, 2024 interview with PEOPLE, syndicated by Yahoo Entertainment, she described making her 2023 album Chemistry as a way to examine what had happened in her life and what she might do next.
What Kelly Clarkson said about depression and divorce
Clarkson said the emotions surrounding divorce or grieving can feel overwhelming and isolating. “Because the level of depression and things that come with divorce or grieving is extraordinarily hard,” she told PEOPLE. She added: “You feel alone, and it’s just a blessing to be able to have that outlet for those emotions that are overwhelming.”
In the interview, “depression” is part of Clarkson’s description of her experience; the conversation does not establish whether she received a clinical diagnosis. Her remarks are personal testimony, not a clinical assessment or a claim about how everyone experiences divorce.
How Chemistry became an outlet
Clarkson said she began writing Chemistry to explore what had happened in her life and consider what she would do next. She did not initially set out to make something beyond an outlet for those emotions. The 2023 album is tied to her breakup from Brandon Blackstock, as she was building a new life as a single mother in New York City.

Clarkson also spoke positively about therapy and the value of tools for navigating life and relationships: “That sounds very therapy, but that’s because I love therapy, and I think it’s important to have those tools to navigate your life and relationships.” This was her personal view in the interview, not a prescribed course of care for readers.
