Horror clowns range from brightly colored extraterrestrials to figures whose stillness is more frightening than any joke. This ranking moves from camp and comic menace toward sustained terror, weighing each character’s role in the film, threat, distinctive design and behavior, and the tone of the story. It is an editorial order, not a canonical or measurable verdict: a clown can be iconic because it is memorable without being the scariest.
How this ranking works
The list is limited to characters in horror movies, rather than television characters, real-life stories, or figures from films that do not fit the scope. It includes distinct clown characters, not two versions of one character counted separately to reach 15. The order reflects a blend of the clown’s importance to the movie, how threatening it is in the story, how distinctive its look and behavior are, and whether the film plays its menace for comedy, camp, or sustained fear.
That tonal distinction matters. The British Film Institute describes Killer Klowns from Outer Space as a comic film with deliberately designed creature effects, while TheWrap notes that some viewers may find the 1990 Pennywise campy even as the character commands attention. The Rotten Tomatoes and TheWrap lists offer editorial selections, not an authoritative set or ranking of the genre’s clowns.
15 horror-movie clowns, from silliest to scariest
15. The clowns in Krampus (2015)
The clown figures in Krampus belong to a larger holiday-horror menagerie, so they are not the film’s sole focus. Their grotesque, storybook quality makes them memorable, but the movie’s broader fantasy-horror tone keeps them closer to macabre spectacle than to a sustained slasher threat.

14. The alien clowns in Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988)
Stephen Chiodo’s film turns its extraterrestrial invaders into brightly colored, deliberately absurd clowns. Their outlandish designs and comic presentation are the point: they can be unsettling, but their campy energy keeps the scares playful. The BFI highlights the film’s comic approach and carefully designed creature effects.
13. Bobo in Out of the Dark (1989)
Bobo is one of the clown figures in this horror-comedy about a series of attacks on telephone-sex workers. The character’s place in an intentionally odd, darkly comic film makes him more eccentric than terrifying; his presence is a reminder that movie clowns can be unsettling without carrying a film’s full weight of dread.
12. The Funny Clown in The Last Circus (2010)
Álex de la Iglesia’s Spanish film sets its clown imagery inside a violent, surreal story. The Funny Clown’s name and role point toward performance and comedy, but the film’s unstable tone makes the laughter feel uneasy rather than comforting.

11. The Sad Clown in The Last Circus (2010)
The Sad Clown is the darker counterpart to the Funny Clown, with the film turning the contrast between comic identity and pain into part of its disturbing effect. He ranks above his counterpart because the sadness and violence surrounding him make the clown persona feel less like an act and more like a wound.

10. The clown killer in The House on Sorority Row (1982)
The clown disguise in this slasher makes an already familiar masked-killer setup more unnerving. The scare comes less from a developed clown personality than from the mismatch between a costume associated with amusement and the threat it conceals.
9. The clowns in Clownhouse (1989)
Clownhouse builds its horror around clowns who menace a group of brothers. The film draws on the basic discomfort of seeing a familiar performance costume become a source of danger, making the figures threatening through their role in the story rather than through elaborate supernatural mythology.

8. The clown doll in Poltergeist (1982)
This is a toy, not a human clown character, and that distinction is central to its effect. The doll’s fixed grin and small, familiar shape turn an ordinary childhood object into a source of dread. It has limited agency compared with the killers and monsters higher on the list, but its design makes the fear immediate.
7. Captain Spaulding in House of 1000 Corpses (2003) and The Devil’s Rejects (2005)
Rob Zombie’s Captain Spaulding mixes roadside-showmanship with open menace. His clown makeup and abrasive performance make him grotesque rather than whimsical, and his association with the family at the center of House of 1000 Corpses and The Devil’s Rejects gives the clown persona a place in a much wider world of cruelty.

Clown builds its horror around a man who puts on a clown suit that he cannot remove. The premise makes the costume itself part of the threat: instead of using clown makeup as a disguise, the film turns the transformation into a source of escalating body-horror unease.

5. Art the Clown in All Hallows’ Eve (2013) and Terrifier (2016)
Art’s stark makeup and silent performance give him a distinctive presence across All Hallows’ Eve and Terrifier. Unlike a clown whose menace depends on a joke or a disguise, Art’s stillness and deliberate behavior are themselves threatening. His place in films that foreground graphic violence makes him one of the list’s most intense entries.
4. Pennywise in the 1990 adaptation of It
The 1990 screen adaptation of Stephen King’s It gives Pennywise a theatrical, sometimes camp-coded quality, but that does not make the character easy to dismiss. TheWrap includes the performance among its notable scary clowns and observes that its tone may strike some viewers as campy. Pennywise’s attention-commanding presence and role as the story’s central threat carry him well beyond a simple gag.
3. The clown in Poltergeist (1982)
Unlike the toy ranked above, this entry refers to the film’s clown imagery as part of its haunted-house horror. Poltergeist makes ordinary domestic surroundings feel unsafe, and its clown material benefits from that shift in tone: what might be harmless in a bedroom becomes ominous in a story where the familiar turns against its occupants.

2. Pennywise in the 2017 adaptation of It
The 2017 adaptation presents a different screen version of Pennywise from the 1990 one, with its own design and performance. The clown remains the story’s central supernatural menace, and the film leans more directly into horror imagery. Ranking the adaptations separately here is a comparison of portrayals, not a claim that they are separate characters.
1. Art the Clown in Terrifier (2016)
Art takes the top spot for the sustained, direct threat he represents in Terrifier. His silent, expressive performance makes the clown face difficult to read, while the film’s emphasis on graphic violence removes much of the playful distance that softens campier entries. He is not the only memorable clown on this list, but he is its most relentlessly frightening.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why some famous clown choices are not included
This countdown sticks to horror movies. Twisty is a television character from American Horror Story, while Joker portrayals do not provide a clean fit for a horror-movie-only list. Real-life clown stories also belong to a different category. Leaving them out keeps the ranking focused on fictional movie clowns rather than mixing formats and subjects.
