Meredith Maines and Method Communications had concluded their work with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex by December 2025. ITV News reported that Liam Maguire, previously the couple’s UK and Europe communications director, was asked to step up as chief communications officer. In January 2026, PR trade publication O’Dwyer’s reported, citing People, that Sunshine Sachs Morgan & Lylis was returning to support the couple’s US activities and Meghan Markle’s lifestyle brand.
What changed in the Sussexes’ PR team?
The change involved both an internal communications lead and external agency support. In its December 27, 2025 report, ITV News reported that Meredith Maines had left the chief communications officer role less than a year after taking it, and that Liam Maguire had been asked to take over the lead role. The Sussexes’ spokesperson said Maines and Method Communications had concluded their work with the couple.
On January 19, 2026, O’Dwyer’s reported, citing People magazine, that the couple was returning to Sunshine Sachs Morgan & Lylis. The trade publication said the agency would support Markle’s lifestyle brand and the couple’s US activities, coordinating with the internal team, including Maguire. This agency arrangement was reported secondhand; neither the Sussexes nor the agency is quoted making a direct announcement in that report.
Who is handling their communications now?
Liam Maguire: reported internal lead
ITV reported that Maguire, who had served as deputy and UK and Europe communications director, was asked to step up as chief communications officer for both the Duke and Duchess. The report describes a change in leadership; it does not set out a detailed division of duties after the handover.

Sunshine Sachs Morgan & Lylis: reported US agency support
O’Dwyer’s reported the firm’s return for US activities and Markle’s lifestyle brand, attributing the information to People. That reported scope is distinct from Maguire’s previously stated UK and Europe remit. The available account does not establish a comparable measure of performance for the agency or the staff, so it does not support a claim that the change improved communications.
Why did Meredith Maines leave?
The public statements did not give a detailed reason for the departure or for ending Method Communications’ work. The couple’s spokesperson said: “Meredith Maines and Method Communications have concluded their work with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. The Duke and Duchess are grateful for their contributions and wish them well.”

Maines said: “After a year of inspiring work with Prince Harry and Meghan, Duke and Duchess of Sussex and Archewell, I will be pursuing a new opportunity in 2026. I have the utmost gratitude and respect for the couple and the team, and the good they are doing in the world.” ITV also reported that an unnamed source close to Maines said she had decided it was “time to go” and had helped during a transition period. The outlet described disagreement about her professional fit as talk among some team members, while sources close to Maines defended her background. Those are claims attributed to ITV’s sources, not reasons confirmed in the couple’s statement.
How the team change unfolded
| Date | Reported development |
|---|---|
| February 28, 2025 | Axios reported that Maines had been hired as the couple’s first chief communications officer, with a March 3 start date. Axios said her remit covered the couple’s communications, business portfolio and nonprofit work. |
| December 27, 2025 | ITV News reported Maines’s departure, the end of Method Communications’ work and Maguire’s reported step-up to chief communications officer. |

What does the “eleventh publicist” figure mean?
ITV’s December 2025 headline described Maines as the “eleventh PR officer in just five years”; The Independent also characterized her as the eleventh publicist to exit in five years. That is a tally reported by those outlets, not an independently audited statistic. It also does not, by itself, explain why any individual left or establish the performance of the communications operation.

How this differs from the former royal communications setup
The couple’s private communications operation should not be confused with the arrangement they had as working royals. In a March 15, 2019 announcement, the Royal Family said new Sussex communications staff would be part of the Buckingham Palace communications team and report to the Queen’s Communications Secretary; it named Sara Latham to lead Sussex communications at that time. That describes a past household structure, not the later private team.
