What happened to Steve McMichael?
McMichael died after living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), according to the Chicago Bears and Pro Football Hall of Fame. Those official accounts confirm his death date and describe his battle with ALS, but do not provide a more specific formal cause-of-death statement. He was 67.
The Bears announced in April 2021 that McMichael had been diagnosed with ALS. In an April 7, 2026 announcement, the Concussion & CTE Foundation said Boston University CTE Center researchers had diagnosed him posthumously with stage 3 CTE, a finding separate from his ALS diagnosis. The announcement does not establish CTE as the cause of his death.
Why was McMichael a Chicago Bears legend?
McMichael played defensive tackle for Chicago from 1981 through 1993 and was a central member of the Bears’ 1985 Super Bowl XX championship team. His 191 consecutive games for the franchise set a Bears record, according to the team’s 2025 remembrance.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame records him as a three-time first-team All-Pro (1985–87) and a two-time Pro Bowler. Its profile credits him with 95 career sacks, including 92.5 with Chicago; the Bears say that team total ranks second in franchise history. The Hall also says Chicago’s 72 sacks as a team in 1984 remain an NFL record.
When was Steve McMichael inducted into the Hall of Fame?
McMichael entered the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2024. Because ALS prevented him from traveling to Canton, the Hall presented his gold jacket and bust at his Chicago-area home. He was also a member of the College Football Hall of Fame, recognized for his career at the University of Texas.

What was McMichael’s career before and after the Bears?
Born in Houston on October 17, 1957, McMichael played college football at Texas from 1976 to 1979 and became a unanimous First Team All-American. The National Football Foundation credits him with 369 tackles and 30 sacks at Texas.
New England selected him in the third round of the 1980 NFL Draft. He joined the Bears as a free agent in 1981 and spent the next 13 seasons with Chicago. After his playing career, he also performed as a professional wrestler.

What did the 2026 CTE announcement say?
The Concussion & CTE Foundation said Boston University CTE Center researchers found stage 3 CTE in McMichael’s brain after his death. Dr. Ann McKee, the center’s director and chief of neuropathology for VA Boston Healthcare System, said McMichael had severe CTE as well as ALS, with TDP-43 inclusions typical of ALS in his brainstem and spinal cord.
McMichael’s wife, Misty McMichael, said the family shared the diagnosis to raise awareness of what she called the connection between CTE and ALS. The foundation also summarized a 2021 Harvard Medical School and Boston University CTE Center study reporting that NFL players were more than four times as likely to have ALS as the general male population. That population-level association does not establish that football caused McMichael’s ALS.
