The song known as “The Most Mysterious Song on the Internet” is “Subways of Your Mind,” recorded by the German band FEX and written by its singer and guitarist, Ture Rückwardt. The identification came in 2024 after years of online searching, a paper trail through music archives, and confirmation from the band’s former members.
What is the mysterious song, and who recorded it?
It is “Subways of Your Mind,” a song FEX recorded in 1983. FEX was a band from Kiel, Germany; Rückwardt wrote the song. NDR reported the identification on November 11, 2024, after Reddit user Marijn contacted former FEX keyboardist and producer Michael Hädrich. Hädrich recognized the recording and got in touch with his former bandmates. The musicians said they had not known about the online search until they were contacted. (NDR, November 11, 2024)
NDR said the song had passed 10 million YouTube views by the time of its 2024 report. That is a dated figure, not a current view count. The search had lasted 17 years from the first online upload to the identification, according to the same report.
How did the search begin?
The trail started with a radio recording. In 1984, a young listener named Darius taped the song from NDR but did not note its title or artist. In 2007, his sister Lydia posted an excerpt online and asked people to identify it. What began as the question “what is this song called?” became a sprawling effort across music forums and, later, Reddit and Discord. (NDR, November 11, 2024)

How did Reddit researchers find FEX?
The breakthrough was not just a lucky guess from hearing the track. Researchers built a trail from historical clues and checked it against people who could identify the recording. WIRED reported that a Reddit user found a connection to Hörfest, an amateur-band contest in Hamburg. Searchers then used local archives and shared spreadsheets to work through possible bands and musicians. (WIRED, November 6, 2024)
Marijn traced a musician associated with the band Phret to FEX, then contacted members of FEX. Hädrich recognized the track and consulted his former bandmates. The band agreed to the identification before it was announced publicly. This combination of documentary clues and direct confirmation is what turned a plausible lead into an answer.

What confirmed that FEX was the right band?
FEX members had recordings of their own. NDR reported that the band held a 1983 cassette and a live recording from a 1985 show at the Roxy club in Paderborn. The musicians said Rückwardt’s voice was recognizable on the live performance. (NDR, November 11, 2024)
In January 2025, Hädrich found another cassette while sorting through a box containing more than 200 tapes at home. NDR reported that he compared it with versions circulating online. Hädrich described matching analog-recording characteristics and said the newly found tape contained two drum hits missing from the radio excerpt. Those are his reported observations, rather than an independent audio analysis. He told NDR, “der Fund ist fast besser als die Aufnahme noch einmal aufzunehmen” (“the find is almost better than recording it again”). (NDR, January 16, 2025)

What is still unknown about the original broadcast?
The exact date the song aired and how the recording reached NDR remain unsettled. Online researchers used station logs to narrow the broadcast to early September 1984, but that is an estimate: the song does not appear in the logs. NDR noted that the absence could be related to the song not being registered with GEMA at the time. The band members told NDR they could not remember sending the tape to the broadcaster, and neither they nor the station established whether it was submitted through NDR 2’s “Der Club.” (NDR, January 16, 2025)

All four FEX musicians reunited in December 2024 to record the song again: Rückwardt on vocals and guitar, Hädrich on keyboard, guitar and backing vocals, Norbert Ziermann on bass, and Hans-Reimer Sievers on drums. Hädrich said they were working with as many as 100 audio tracks at once during the rerecording; that figure describes the new session, not the 1983 demo. Rückwardt told NDR, “Es ist toll, nach 41 Jahren wieder gemeinsam zu spielen. Eigentlich ist alles wie früher” (“It’s great to play together again after 41 years. Actually, everything is like it used to be”). (NDR, December 6, 2024)
