Why watches fit the 2025 Met Gala theme
The Gala took place on May 5, 2025. Its dress code, “Tailored for You,” accompanied the Costume Institute exhibition “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” which explored the history and influence of Black style and tailoring. The Met said the dress code pointed to the exhibition’s focus on suiting and menswear while leaving room for creative interpretation. Watches offered another way to express that balance: some were restrained and tailored, others conspicuously jeweled, technically complex or vintage.

Rocky’s Octo Finissimo Ultra COSC makes thinness its headline feature. Time+Tide reported the watch at 1.70 mm thick and used two superlatives in its May 2025 coverage: thinnest production mechanical watch and thinnest COSC-certified chronometer. Those claims belong to that report and date; they should not be read as a timeless market ranking.

Tillman’s Reverso Tribute Duoface Tourbillon takes a different route. Its reversible case means the watch’s second face is part of the experience, with the reverse showing gold bridges, according to Time+Tide. Both watches make their mechanics visible in different ways: one through extreme thinness, the other through a second side and exposed movement details.
Complications as visual detail
A complication can contribute to a watch’s appearance as much as its function. The reported sightings included tourbillons on Tillman’s Reverso and Barkley’s H. Moser & Cie., a calendar display on Goggins’s Vacheron Constantin, a moonphase on Bassett’s Glashütte Original, a jumping hour on Golding’s Cartier and a chronograph on Hurts’s Breitling. These are different design choices, not a measure of which watch is technically “best.”

Materials and color set the tone
Gold, platinum, diamonds and colored stones give some pieces the presence of jewelry. Bassett’s mother-of-pearl and diamond-accented Serenade Luna, Shaboozey’s turquoise-dial Royal Oak and the reported Rainbow Daytona are vivid examples. Hurts’s steel Navitimer with an ice-blue dial reads cooler and more understated by comparison, while Barkley’s largely black Moser offers a restrained, high-contrast look.
Vintage and personal expression
Not every memorable choice depended on a new complication or a precious-metal case. Rock’s reported vintage watch brooch and Pope’s vintage Golden Ellipse bring older designs into a contemporary red-carpet setting. How to read red-carpet watch identifications
Celebrity watch roundups rely on editorial reporting and visual identification. A model name reported by an outlet is useful, but it is not the same as a statement from the wearer or manufacturer. Keep three distinctions in mind:
- Reported model versus confirmed ownership: Pusha T was photographed with a Rainbow Daytona, but speculation that he owns it should not be treated as fact.
- Unreleased at the event versus available to buy: Domingo’s Omega was described as unreleased at the Gala; that does not establish current retail availability.
- Visible watch versus unresolved detail: Time+Tide identified Pope’s watch as a vintage Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse but could not establish which retailer’s signature it bore.
There is also a difference in the reporting on Goggins’s Vacheron Constantin: Time+Tide identifies a platinum limited edition, while GQ India reports a Traditionnelle Complete Calendar Openface with differing model detail. The identification is best kept at the model-family level rather than using one account to assert unverified technical specifics.
