There is no public confirmation in the sources reviewed that Anya Taylor-Joy has Waardenburg syndrome. She has said she was bullied at school, including for her eyes and looks, but her interviews do not connect that bullying to a diagnosis of the syndrome.

Has Anya Taylor-Joy said she has Waardenburg syndrome?

None of the interviews reviewed for this article has Taylor-Joy saying that she has Waardenburg syndrome. A report published in April 2023 described the claim as an assumption and said she had not publicly confirmed it at that time. That is a statement about public confirmation, not a clinical assessment or evidence about her private medical history.

The available public sources reviewed as of October 4, 2026, do not provide a diagnosis from Taylor-Joy or a clinician. It would therefore be inaccurate to state either that she has the condition or that she does not.

What has she said about being bullied at school?

Culture shock and difficulty fitting in

In a 2017 British Vogue interview, Taylor-Joy described culture shock after her family moved to the UK and said transitioning into a London school was particularly difficult. She said, “I was bullied quite a bit.” She also said she left school at 16.

Incidents she recalled

In a 2017 Evening Standard interview, she recalled being “locked in lockers,” barred from classrooms and left out socially. The article also reported that classmates tagged her in a picture of a fish on Facebook. Taylor-Joy said her eyes were “really far apart” and described crying in bathrooms or reading. She said she had not felt that she fit in.

Her comments about her eyes and looks

In a 2021 Entertainment Tonight interview, Taylor-Joy said, “I would say that I’ve grown to love my eyes. I was really bullied for them when I was little. Now, it seems they’re the thing people want from me.” The Standard’s 2022 report on her appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show also recounted her saying she had been bullied for her looks. It described her mother’s advice to look at what is inside a person rather than their appearance or class.

What is Waardenburg syndrome?

Can appearance alone show whether someone has the syndrome?

No. A visible feature such as widely spaced eyes is not enough to identify a person’s condition. The clinical information describes a range of features, and resemblance to one feature cannot establish a diagnosis. Taylor-Joy’s account that she was bullied for her eyes is evidence of what she says happened to her; it is not evidence that she has a particular genetic condition.
