No. Squid Game is a fictional survival drama, and its deadly tournament is not based on a documented real event. The series does draw on real pressures and influences—including creator Hwang Dong-hyuk’s financial circumstances, social competition and a labor conflict connected to one character’s backstory—but those links are not evidence that the games happened.
What is real in Squid Game—and what is fictional?
The central premise—a group of people forced to play children’s games where losing means death—is fiction. Radio Times reports no real-life cases of contestants being forced to compete in deadly versions of children’s games. The show’s recognizable games and social themes have real-world roots, but its lethal contest does not.
- Fiction: the tournament, its organizers and the deadly eliminations.
- Real influence: Hwang’s own financial strain and the economic anxiety of the period when he developed the idea.
- Social commentary: the story’s portrayal of extreme competition in capitalist society.
- Character inspiration: the Ssangyong Motor layoffs and labor conflict in South Korea informed part of Gi-hun’s backstory; the fictional character and company are not documentary records of the tournament.
Why did Hwang Dong-hyuk create the story?
Hwang has described the series as an allegory or fable about modern capitalist society and extreme competition. In Netflix’s account of the production, he said: “I wanted to write a story that was an allegory or fable about modern capitalist society, something that depicts an extreme competition, somewhat like the extreme competition of life.” The premise uses a fantastical contest to sharpen that social critique; it is not presented as a report of an actual clandestine event. Netflix’s production history includes Hwang’s comments on the concept and its themes.
Personal financial pressure and the 2008 crisis
Hwang first wrote the idea as a feature-film script in 2009, after the global financial crisis. Netflix Queue reports that he was supporting his family as its sole earner. These personal and economic circumstances help explain the story’s concern with desperation and money; they do not establish the plot as true.

Familiar children’s games
Hwang chose simple, familiar games—including Red Light, Green Light—so viewers could immediately understand the rules. Their ordinary, playful quality makes the violence more unsettling and reinforces the contrast between childhood innocence and adult desperation. The games themselves are real forms of play; the deadly stakes are invented.
Manga influences, not adaptations
Hwang said he read Japanese comics such as Battle Royale and Liar Game while thinking about a survival-game story. He found the games in those works too complex for his purposes and opted for familiar children’s games. That makes the manga part of the creative context, not proof that Squid Game adapts either work or recounts real events. Radio Times’ explainer discusses those influences.

Is Squid Game based on Brothers’ Home?
That claim is not confirmed by the sources cited here. Radio Times reports that Hwang has never identified Brothers’ Home as an inspiration. Comparisons people draw between the institution and images or themes in the series should therefore not be presented as the creator’s stated source, or as evidence that the tournament is historical.

According to Netflix’s production history, Hwang conceived the concept in 2008 and completed an initial script in 2009. He first intended it as a feature film, but the project was shelved after he had difficulty securing investment and casting. Roughly a decade later, he developed it as a series.
