Brian David Mitchell is serving a federal life sentence; the latest located report placed him at FCI Lewisburg in Pennsylvania in October 2025. Wanda Barzee was released from prison in 2018 and had completed parole by June 2025. A separate case over alleged visits to restricted parks remained unresolved in the latest located update: on May 8, 2026, her attorney said a plea-in-abeyance arrangement was being negotiated, with a hearing scheduled for June 5.
Brian David Mitchell: serving a federal life sentence
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Utah announced on May 25, 2011, that Mitchell would serve life in federal prison after his conviction for interstate kidnapping and unlawful transportation of a minor. The Justice Department announcement identifies the sentence as punishment for Elizabeth Smart’s 2002 abduction.
The latest located report giving a specific prison placement is Indiana Public Media’s October 30, 2025, account. It said Mitchell had been transferred from USP Terre Haute, via the Federal Transfer Center in Oklahoma City, to FCI Lewisburg in central Pennsylvania. A Lewisburg official told the outlet, “He is currently housed at our institution.” That confirms his reported placement at the time of the statement, not his location today. Indiana Public Media’s report also described attacks in custody based on accounts from people familiar with the incidents and incarcerated witnesses; the prison did not respond to the outlet’s specific questions about those incidents.
Wanda Barzee: released, with a separate later case
Barzee’s sentence and release followed a different legal path. KSL reported that she pleaded guilty in federal court in 2009 to kidnapping and unlawful transportation of a minor. In a separate Utah state case, she pleaded guilty and mentally ill in 2010 to attempting to kidnap Smart’s cousin and received a sentence of up to 15 years. After completing her federal sentence in 2016, she returned to Utah custody. The Utah Board of Pardons and Parole released her on September 19, 2018, crediting time served in federal prison. KSL’s account of her legal history says she had completed parole by its June 2025 reporting.

In May 2025, police alleged that Barzee had visited at least Liberty Park and Sugar House Park, places her registered-sex-offender restrictions prohibited her from entering. KSL’s account of a police booking affidavit said Barzee told authorities she had been commanded by the Lord to go to the parks, sit on benches and feed ducks. These were allegations, not findings of guilt. The resulting charges were separate from her completed parole; KSL reported that she was released after the arrest and appeared in court outside state custody. KSL’s May 2025 report describes the alleged park visits, and its June 2025 update covers her court appearance and release.
What was reported about the 2026 proceeding
Deseret News reported on May 8, 2026, that Barzee faced two class A misdemeanor counts of being a sex offender in a protected area. Her attorney told the court that a plea-in-abeyance arrangement was being negotiated, and a hearing for her to enter the plea was scheduled for June 5. As described in that report, the plea would remain on hold while she followed conditions for a year; if she complied, it would not be entered as a conviction. The report described a proposed arrangement, not a completed plea or final outcome. Deseret News’ May 8, 2026, report does not establish what happened at the scheduled hearing.
