The series turns the Black Spot, a brief historical interlude in King’s novel, into a season-building catastrophe. It expands how the attack unfolds and makes escape more dangerous, while preserving the essential distinction: Derry residents commit the racist atrocity; It is not responsible for setting the club ablaze.
What is the Black Spot?
The Black Spot is a juke joint in Derry where Black servicemen from a nearby Air Force base gather. In Stephen King’s It, its destruction is part of the novel’s historical interludes, which Mike Hanlon investigates to understand Derry’s recurring violence. The fire is fictional, belonging to King’s story and its adaptation.
The book recounts the event retrospectively rather than building a full sequence around it. Esquire’s account of the novel and series describes the show’s shift in family focus: the 1962 story follows the Hanlons and brings Mike’s grandfather Leroy into the event, whereas the novel’s remembered account comes through Mike’s father, Will.
How does the series stage the attack?
Episode 7, “The Black Spot,” makes the attack a central on-screen event after the season has been moving toward it. In TheWrap’s episode breakdown and interview, the attackers arrive looking for Hank Grogan. When they are refused entry, they board up the club with Black soldiers inside and set it on fire.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The adaptation extends the book’s comparatively sparse retrospective account into a sustained sequence. One consequential change is the danger at the exits: the novel’s account gives people windows and places to climb out, while the series shows attackers shooting at people who try to escape. That choice makes the physical threat immediate and visible rather than simply reporting the fire’s devastation.
Andy Muschietti, the episode’s director and an executive producer, told TheWrap that he wanted to be respectful of “the spirit of The Black Spot and the tragic nature of the atrocity that happened there.” The altered staging is an expansion, not a claim that the source novel treats the event as unimportant.

Why is the Black Spot a season-building event?
The series makes the fire a point where its separate storylines converge. Andy Muschietti described the Black Spot as a “finish line” for the season’s stories in TV Insider’s interview with Andy and Barbara Muschietti. That gives the event a larger structural role than it has in the novel’s brief historical account.
The official podcast’s episode 7 listing calls “The Black Spot” the season’s penultimate chapter and frames the club’s fall as a major emotional turn. The fire is therefore not only a piece of Derry’s past; the adaptation makes it a culmination in the season’s present-tense drama.

What changes for Dick Hallorann and the Hanlons?
Dick Hallorann appears in the novel’s Black Spot account and tries to help people using his Shining. The series gives him a larger part in the escape sequence. Muschietti described the tension as a choice between saving himself and helping others in TheWrap’s interview. Hallorann’s expanded role puts a personal decision inside the larger catastrophe rather than leaving his attempt to help as a brief detail in a historical recollection.
The adaptation also relocates the family perspective to the Hanlons of 1962, including Leroy, rather than relying on the novel’s account through Will. That shift ties the historical atrocity to people the series has placed in its central story.

Who is responsible for the Black Spot fire?
The attack is racist violence carried out by people from Derry, not an act by It or Pennywise. Muschietti stressed this distinction when discussing the adaptation: “Such a tragic event. Such an atrocity committed, not by It, but by the people of Derry.” He connected it to what he called one of the book’s central truths: “Humans are capable of doing things as bad or worse than this monster.” Those comments were reported by TV Insider.
Keeping that responsibility clear matters to the scene’s meaning. The supernatural story may surround the fire, but it does not erase the human perpetrators or turn the racist attack into Pennywise’s doing. Salon’s discussion of the show’s treatment of racist violence considers how the adaptation represents that material without relying on incendiary insults.

How to compare the episode with the novel
Readers who want to see the adaptation choices firsthand can compare episode 7 with the Black Spot interlude in King’s It. The novel offers the event as part of Mike’s inquiry into Derry’s past; the series dramatizes the attack, extends the escape sequence, enlarges Hallorann’s role, and brings the Hanlons of 1962 closer to the catastrophe. The series does not simply reproduce a long set piece: it builds a season climax from a comparatively compressed account.
