Netflix’s Argentine series The Eternaut used generative AI in the final footage of a visual-effects sequence showing a building collapsing in Buenos Aires, according to Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos. Sarandos said the sequence was completed ten times faster and at lower cost than with traditional visual-effects workflows; Netflix has not disclosed the model or detailed process behind the shot.
Which Netflix show used video-generating AI?
The series is The Eternaut (El Eternauta), an Argentine science-fiction adaptation of the graphic novel by Héctor G. Oesterheld and illustrator Francisco Solano López. Netflix describes it as the first screen adaptation of the comic, which was first published in 1957. What was the AI-generated effect?
Sarandos identified a sequence in which a building collapses in Buenos Aires. He said it was the first generative-AI final footage to appear on screen in a Netflix original series or film. That is a claim about generative AI in finished footage within Netflix originals—not a claim that Netflix had never used AI for any other production task. TechCrunch, July 18, 2025.
The available reporting does not identify the AI model or vendor, explain the prompts or production steps, or break down how the generated material was incorporated into the shot. It therefore does not establish that the entire sequence was generated by AI; the supported claim is that generative AI was used in its final footage.

How much faster and cheaper was it?
Sarandos said the sequence was completed ten times faster than it could have been using traditional visual-effects workflows and cost less. Netflix’s comparison, as reported by TechCrunch, does not include a baseline schedule, dollar figures, or an independent assessment. The claim indicates the scale of the reported time saving, but it is not enough to calculate the production’s actual savings or compare costs across projects.
What is known about the production’s scale?
Associated Press reported that Netflix did not disclose the series’ budget. AP also reported Netflix figures of 2,900 people involved in production, four years of pre- and post-production, and a $34 million contribution to Argentina’s economy. That economic contribution is not the show’s budget and should not be read as a measure of what the production spent on the AI-assisted shot. Why the distinction matters
The report concerns an AI-assisted visual-effects moment in a specific series, not evidence that a whole Netflix production was made with generative AI. The publicly described example is a building-collapse shot; the technical method and the exact division of work between AI and other visual-effects processes remain undisclosed. Netflix’s claims about speed and cost are attributed to Sarandos rather than independently quantified.
