Spoilers for Arcane Season 2, Episode 9, “The Dirt Under Your Nails.” Yes—the strongest supported reading is that Jayce dies in the finale. He and Viktor disappear together after stopping the wild rune, and Arcane co-creator Christian Linke later described their disintegration as “their end.”
What happens to Jayce in the finale?
Jayce reaches Viktor during the final battle and persuades him to stop the Glorious Evolution. They enter the astral plane associated with Viktor, are pulled into Jayce’s rune, and vanish. Their action stops the machine ascension; TheWrap describes it as a sacrifice. TheWrap’s finale recap describes the sequence.
The episode does not show a conventional, separate death scene or an aftermath in which Jayce’s fate is confirmed through ordinary physical evidence. What it shows is the pair disappearing. Netflix’s Afterglow offers the clearest creator clarification: GamesRadar reports that Linke said they “have disintegrated” and that this is “their end as well.” GamesRadar’s report on Linke’s comments supports a direct yes, while keeping clear that the episode itself conveys the fate through disappearance.
Why does the ending feel unresolved?
Linke also said, “To me, the Jayce/Viktor ending, to a certain degree, feels unresolved.” As reported by GamesRadar from Netflix’s Afterglow, he felt the characters should have had more to say and more time together. That comment describes the limited emotional closure in the finale; it does not reverse his reported statement that their disintegration is their end.

Does this mean Jayce’s story in all of Runeterra is over?
It establishes the end of Jayce’s arc in Arcane, not the end of every story set in Runeterra. Netflix’s November 26, 2024 guide identifies Season 2 as the series’ second and final season and says the show’s story wraps with it, while placing Arcane within a broader Runeterra storytelling journey. Netflix’s Season 2 guide provides that scope.
