Netflix describes a buyer-and-licensor model and does not accept unsolicited pitches; Amazon’s Prime Video Direct program lets rights holders submit titles for possible distribution under specified modes and territories. That self-service program is not a proxy for every Amazon commissioning or acquisition deal, and neither company’s public materials establish standard documentary fees, advances, or rights terms.
How Netflix gets documentaries
Netflix says it both licenses titles from studios and content providers and secures exclusive rights to others. A title labeled or presented as a “Netflix Original” is not necessarily a work Netflix produced. Licensed titles may be available only in certain countries or for limited periods. Netflix’s licensing explanation describes this from a viewer-facing perspective.
How filmmakers can pitch
Netflix’s public pitching guidance says it does not accept unsolicited submissions. It directs creators to work through an agent, producer, attorney, manager, or industry executive who already has a relationship with Netflix. Netflix also says it finds projects through creative executives and buyers, its relationships with the creative community and talent agencies, established venues such as festivals, and internally developed projects. Its guidance states: “If you do not have any of these resources available, Netflix will be unable to accept your unsolicited submissions.” Read Netflix’s pitching guidance.
This is a description of Netflix’s public route for pitches, not a guarantee that a representative’s submission will be accepted or that every acquisition follows the same path.

How Prime Video Direct works for rights holders
Prime Video Direct is a specific submission and distribution program. Its agreement gives rights holders a way to authorize Amazon to offer titles through digital purchase, rental, subscription access (including Prime Video), a content-provider channel, or ad-supported access. A provider identifies the distribution modes and territories it authorizes; Amazon retains discretion over whether to select and distribute a title within that scope. The agreement says: “Amazon is entitled in its sole discretion to determine which Titles it chooses to license and distribute on the Service.” The agreement is marked “Last Updated: December 1, 2023.” Read the Prime Video Direct Digital License Agreement.
What a submission requires
The rights holder must have the necessary rights and clearances and be ready to deliver the materials the program calls for. The agreement covers a high-resolution title, promotional materials, captions and audio-language files, metadata, and ratings information as applicable. Amazon may request evidence of rights and may remove titles. The program landing page says there are no setup or recurring charges to submit titles; that does not mean distribution is assured or that all terms of other Amazon deals are the same. What filmmakers should establish before pursuing either route
- Confirm chain of title. Identify who controls the film and every necessary underlying right, release, and clearance. Prime Video Direct expressly requires rights and clearances; any actual Netflix offer also needs to be assessed on its own contract terms.
- Clarify the exact grant. In an offer or program authorization, check the territories, distribution modes, exclusivity, and duration. Do not infer these terms from a platform label or a general help page.
- Prepare delivery materials. For Prime Video Direct, use the agreement’s stated delivery requirements to prepare the master, promotional assets, captions, language files, metadata, and applicable ratings details.
- Keep route and deal separate. A submission pathway explains how a title may reach a buyer or service; it does not establish selection, payment, or the rights a particular contract will require.
What viewers should know about availability
A documentary’s presence on either service does not establish that it is available everywhere or indefinitely. Netflix says licensed titles can be geographically or time limited; Prime Video Direct rights are specified title by title and vary by authorized territory and mode. Check the service in your country for current availability rather than relying on a listing seen elsewhere.

The cited sources do not support a general claim that one company pays documentary filmmakers more, requires a particular exclusivity period, or routinely takes a particular rights package. Netflix’s pages explain licensing and pitching, while Prime Video Direct’s agreement governs that program, not every Amazon commissioning or acquisition. Terms need to be evaluated in the specific offer or contract.
