The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon — The Book of Carol connects Daryl and Carol’s history to their present through Carol’s search for him and the survival-tested bond they have built over years. But AMC’s season setup does not promise a flashback or reenactment of their first meeting; the connection is emotional and thematic, not a confirmed return to that scene.
What the season actually connects to their past
The six-episode second season picks up after The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon. AMC’s June 6, 2024 announcement sets the two characters on parallel paths: Carol searches for her friend while Daryl weighs whether to remain in France. Their stories are shaped by the same separation, even as the season also follows the conflict between Genet and the Union of Hope over France’s future. AMC Networks’ season announcement gave the U.S. premiere date as September 29, 2024, on AMC and AMC+.
Does The Book of Carol show their first meeting?
AMC’s published season description and its October 7, 2024 interview with Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride do not say that the show revisits, recreates, or flashes back to Daryl and Carol’s first meeting. That means the title’s “first meeting ever” should not be read as a promise of a literal scene. What the available official material supports is a return to the history that makes their present-day search matter.
For readers wanting a definitive answer about a specific episode, the distinction matters: a relationship can be connected to its beginnings through character history without the series showing those beginnings again. AMC’s interview with the performers discusses the bond and Carol’s emotional story, not a promised first-meeting flashback.

How the characters describe their bond
Years of looking out for each other
Reedus, who is also an executive producer, describes their history as ongoing mutual care: “They were always watching each other, making sure the other person was okay.” He calls the relationship “a real, earned relationship.” That history gives Carol’s search for Daryl emotional weight beyond the immediate question of whether she can find him.
A connection shaped by shared survival
McBride, also an executive producer, describes what holds them together as “an emotional bond, the bond of survival, and just the strangeness of surviving in this weird world together. It’s their shared experience.” The point is not that they have always been together; rather, separation does not erase the history they have accumulated by surviving alongside one another.

Why Carol’s past matters to her search
McBride says that Carol’s trauma over losing Sophia resurfaces as Carol searches for Daryl. That makes the search a bridge between an earlier, defining loss and the danger of losing another person who matters to her. It is a specific emotional link to Carol’s past, not evidence that the season returns to the scene where she first encountered Daryl.
McBride’s earlier return announcement captured the uncertainty built into their separate paths: “Apart or (hopefully!) together, their stories run deep, and I’m so excited to continue Carol’s journey here.” AMC’s October 12, 2023 announcement presented Carol’s return as a continuation of her journey. The later season setup makes that continuation concrete through her effort to find Daryl.

What to expect from the connection
- A parallel reunion story: Carol’s search and Daryl’s decision about France put their relationship at the center of the season’s personal stakes.
- A history recalled through consequences: Carol’s renewed fear of loss and the characters’ established care for each other connect the present story to what they have endured before.
- No confirmed recreation of their first meeting: The official sources above do not identify such a scene, so claims that the season shows it go beyond what those sources establish.
AMC’s July 26, 2024 trailer article reiterated the search-and-separation setup. It also reported that a third season had been announced for production and setting in Spain; that was the announcement made at the time, not a statement about current production status.
