This ranking covers all 43 songs on the three official Guardians of the Galaxy Awesome Mix albums: 12 on Vol. 1, 14 on Vol. 2, and 17 on Vol. 3. It does not include Tyler Bates’ separate film score or claim that every album track appears in a movie: the 2014 Vol. 1 announcement explicitly says “Spirit in the Sky” is not in the film. The order is subjective, balancing each song’s strength on its own, its scene use, its character or story resonance, and how well it stands apart across the trilogy. Marvel’s Vol. 1 announcement also describes Peter Quill’s tape as a connection to his mother and his life on Earth—a reminder that these songs often carry story, not just atmosphere.

How the ranking works

A memorable scene can lift a song, but it cannot do all the work. The top spots go to tracks that combine a strong record with a distinctive use in the films or a meaningful link to the characters. A song with an iconic placement may still rank below a more satisfying listen on its own; close calls go to the track with the richer blend of those qualities. There is no objectively correct order.

The album releases are the boundary: this is a ranking of the three official Awesome Mix tracklists, not every piece of music heard in the films. Vol. 1’s release announcement marks “Spirit in the Sky” as not in the movie, so album inclusion and film appearance are not interchangeable.

Every Awesome Mix song, ranked

  1. “The Chain” — Fleetwood Mac (Vol. 2)

A song about strain and loyalty has exactly the emotional tension the trilogy needs. Fleetwood Mac’s shifting arrangement gives it force beyond a familiar chorus, while its place in Vol. 2’s story makes the title feel less like a classic-rock reference than a statement about people bound together despite their fractures.

    #1 Best Overall

    • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
    • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
    • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
    • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
    • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  2. “Come and Get Your Love” — Redbone (Vol. 1 and Vol. 3)

The trilogy’s most instantly welcoming groove is also its signature musical calling card. Redbone’s buoyant performance makes Peter Quill’s first-film introduction feel gloriously out of step with the danger around him; its return on Vol. 3 turns a one-film hook into a thread connecting the series. The repetition earns its place rather than merely borrowing nostalgia.

  3. “Mr. Blue Sky” — Electric Light Orchestra (Vol. 2)

ELO’s layered, exuberant pop-rock gives the Vol. 2 opening its near-cartoon joy, with a darker contrast underneath. That contrast is the point: the track makes the action feel playful without making the stakes disappear. Director James Gunn told Universal Music Germany he could imagine it played by a Guardians house band, a fitting measure of its larger-than-life energy.

  4. “Father and Son” — Yusuf / Cat Stevens (Vol. 2)

Few songs in the trilogy are as tightly connected to its central wound. Its conversation between generations gives the father-son conflict a tenderness and gravity that spectacle cannot supply. The song also stands on its own as a carefully balanced performance, so its emotional effect is not dependent on the scene alone.

  5. “Dog Days Are Over” — Florence + The Machine (Vol. 3)

Florence Welch’s full-throated release makes this a natural choice for a story about a team fighting toward a future beyond its pain. The track offers a different scale of sound from the older pop and rock that define much of the earlier mixes, while its celebratory force still feels earned rather than pasted over the action.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  6. “I Want You Back” — Jackson 5 (Vol. 1)

The tight rhythm and irresistible vocal hook make this one of the best pure pop records in the set. Its lightness is especially effective against the film’s cosmic setting: the music is unmistakably human, familiar, and fun. It needs little help from the movie to justify repeated listens.

  7. “Do You Realize??” — The Flaming Lips (Vol. 3)

The Flaming Lips turn a simple question into a tender meditation on how brief and precious life is. That gives the song unusual emotional reach in a trilogy full of loss, found family, and hard-won affection. Its softness is a strength: it creates room to feel rather than trying to out-shout the film’s biggest moments.

  8. “Hooked on a Feeling” — Blue Swede (Vol. 1)

The “ooga-chaka” opening is an audacious way to announce that this space adventure has its own comic rhythm. The song is so closely associated with the first film’s marketing and ensemble identity that it can overshadow its merits as a recording; the playful vocal and insistent beat still make it a durable pop pleasure.

  9. “Creep (Acoustic Version)” — Radiohead (Vol. 3)

Radiohead’s restrained arrangement turns a song of alienation into an intimate opening statement. Its stripped-down sound is a sharp change of pace for the franchise, and the vulnerability suits characters who have spent years hiding their hurt behind bravado. It ranks below the top tier because the song’s bleakness is powerful but less naturally replayable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  10. “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” — Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell (Vol. 1)

The duet’s warmth and lift make it an ideal emotional handoff at the close of the first film. Its promise of devotion carries a particular weight in a story framed by Peter’s bond with his mother. The song is a soul standard for good reason, even if its familiar uplift is less surprising than some higher-ranked choices.

  11. “Come a Little Bit Closer” — Jay and the Americans (Vol. 2)

The song’s dramatic romantic pleading becomes a slyly funny match for an action sequence in which attention is elsewhere. Its brisk, theatrical momentum gives the scene a comic engine, and the contrast between the singer’s urgency and the onscreen chaos is one of the mix’s neatest bits of musical timing.

  12. “Moonage Daydream” — David Bowie (Vol. 1)

Bowie’s glam-rock swagger sounds made for a universe of theatrical outsiders. The track brings a streak of danger and decadence that keeps the album from being all sunny singalongs. Its arrangement and performance are compelling, though its film use does not carry quite the emotional weight of the entries above it.

  13. “No Sleep Till Brooklyn” — Beastie Boys (Vol. 3)

The Beastie Boys’ unruly, riff-heavy rap-rock hit has the right abrasive charge for a film that lets its heroes be messy. It supplies a brash jolt among Vol. 3’s more reflective selections. The song’s attitude is its great asset, even if its humor and swagger make it less emotionally layered than the highest-ranked tracks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  14. “Crazy on You” — Heart (Vol. 3)

Ann Wilson’s vocal and Nancy Wilson’s guitar work give Heart’s hard-rock classic both muscle and precision. It adds a full-throttle sound to a collection whose range is broader than the earlier mixes. The record is a standout on its own, though its main appeal here is the explosive energy rather than a deep lyrical connection to the story.

  15. “I’m Not in Love” — 10cc (Vol. 1)

10cc’s soft, layered production makes the song feel suspended in air, while its insistence that the singer is not in love betrays the opposite. That combination of intimacy and denial suits a series whose characters often conceal what matters most. Its slow pace is a deliberate mood, but it makes the track a more situational listen.

  16. “Reasons” — Earth, Wind & Fire (Vol. 3)

Earth, Wind & Fire bring polished musicianship and a sweeping vocal performance to one of Vol. 3’s most romantic choices. It lends the album an elegant, slow-burning moment amid louder rock and comedy. Its placement reflects the strength of the performance, even if the song’s mood is more specialized than the set’s most versatile tracks.

  17. “We Care a Lot” — Faith No More (Vol. 3)

Faith No More’s abrasive, sardonic sound broadens the mix beyond classic radio-friendly pop and rock. The song’s deliberately disaffected attitude adds a useful edge to a film world full of damaged people and institutions. Its roughness is distinctive, though not as universally inviting as the more melodic entries.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  18. “Go All the Way” — Raspberries (Vol. 1)

Raspberries’ power-pop rush is compact and catchy, with the bright hooks and crunchy guitars that make the first mix so easy to revisit. It delivers immediate energy, but its scene and story associations are less resonant than those of the stronger Vol. 1 songs.

  19. “Badlands” — Bruce Springsteen (Vol. 3)

Springsteen’s driving rock and yearning for something better bring a working-class urgency to the album. The track’s determination fits a team accustomed to fighting its way through bad odds. It has a sturdy, satisfying build, though it is less singular within the trilogy than the songs around it.

    • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  20. “Fox on the Run” — Sweet (Vol. 2)

Sweet’s glossy glam-rock chorus is built to be shouted along with, and its crisp, high-energy sound makes a strong early impression on the second mix. It is an excellent fit for the franchise’s cheekier side, if not one of the album’s most emotionally revealing choices.

  21. “Southern Nights” — Glen Campbell (Vol. 2)

Campbell’s smooth vocal and the song’s warm, gently rolling arrangement add a relaxed color to Vol. 2. Its easygoing charm gives the album a pause from its louder cuts. It ranks in the middle because atmosphere and performance carry more of the appeal than a decisive story connection.

  22. “Escape (The Piña Colada Song)” — Rupert Holmes (Vol. 1)

Holmes’ narrative lyric is a miniature comedy of romantic dissatisfaction and an unexpected second chance. Its breezy, instantly recognizable chorus brings welcome levity, although its novelty premise is a narrower draw than the most enduring pop and soul on Vol. 1.

  23. “I Will Dare” — The Replacements (Vol. 3)

The Replacements’ loose, jangling energy gives Vol. 3 a less polished, more indie-rock texture. It feels like a welcome left turn beside the album’s larger anthems, though it has less dramatic scale or immediate hook than the tracks placed higher.

  24. “San Francisco” — The Mowgli’s (Vol. 3)

The Mowgli’s offer a sunny, communal singalong that fits the trilogy’s affection for unlikely groups becoming family. It is an upbeat, accessible cut, but it has to compete with several songs that express belonging or hope with more distinctive musical character.

  25. “Wham Bam Shang-A-Lang” — Silver (Vol. 2)

This soft-rock confection is breezy and catchy, an effective way to keep Vol. 2 from leaning exclusively on famous headliners. Its sweetness is pleasant, but the song has less depth and staying power than the mix’s best pop hooks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  26. “Bring It On Home to Me” — Sam Cooke (Vol. 2)

Cooke’s voice makes the song’s plea for forgiveness sound effortless and deeply human. It is one of the strongest standalone performances in the collection, but its use within this particular album is less defining than the story-rich placements above it.

  27. “Poor Girl” — X (Vol. 3)

X’s lean, sharp-edged punk brings welcome grit to the third mix. The band’s economical delivery stands out among the album’s bigger, more polished sounds, though the track makes a briefer impression than Vol. 3’s most memorable selections.

  28. “O-O-H Child” — The Five Stairsteps (Vol. 1)

The Five Stairsteps’ reassuring harmonies turn the song into a gentle promise that things will improve. It adds soul and tenderness to the first album, even if it does not have the same forceful scene identity as its top-ranked companions.

  29. “Flash Light” — Parliament (Vol. 2)

Parliament’s elastic bass line and funk groove bring a sound that is unmistakably its own. The track is an important change of texture on an album otherwise weighted toward rock and pop, but its appeal is more groove-first than character- or story-driven.

  30. “Since You Been Gone” — Rainbow (Vol. 3)

Rainbow’s hard-rock anthem is direct, loud, and satisfyingly punchy. It gives the third album another dose of arena-sized energy, though the collection has more distinctive guitar showcases and stronger emotional turns elsewhere.

  31. “My Sweet Lord” — George Harrison (Vol. 2)

Harrison’s devotional refrain has a searching quality that resonates with the film’s mythic ideas. Gunn told Universal Music Germany that the song was among his early selections and connected it to the story around Quill’s alien father. That context adds interest to a warm, measured recording, though its film meaning is more specific than the broad emotional pull of the upper ranks.

  32. “I’m Always Chasing Rainbows” — Alice Cooper (Vol. 3)

Alice Cooper’s take on the old standard is a striking tonal detour: wistful material filtered through a performer known for theatrical rock. That contrast makes it memorable in the album sequence, even if the arrangement is more of a curiosity than a song many listeners will return to first.

  33. “Surrender” — Cheap Trick (Vol. 2)

Cheap Trick’s power-pop snap and chorus make this an easy fit for the franchise’s irreverent streak. It is lively and sharply performed, but the set contains several songs with stronger scene timing or more singular emotional weight.

  34. “Cherry Bomb” — The Runaways (Vol. 1)

The Runaways deliver a brash, rebellious burst that suits the team’s outsider identity. Its attitude is clear and fun, though the track’s bluntness and short punch make it less varied than the more enduring songs around it.

  35. “This Is the Day” — The The (Vol. 3)

The The’s reflective alternative rock adds a thoughtful, inward-looking tone to the third collection. The song’s mood gives Vol. 3 some needed space, but its appeal is quieter and less immediate than the album’s strongest emotional pieces.

  36. “In the Meantime” — Spacehog (Vol. 3)

Spacehog’s glam-tinged alternative rock has a sweeping chorus and a confident, space-age sheen that feels at home in the franchise. It is a strong mid-tempo rock song, though it does not leave as distinctive a story or character imprint as the higher-ranked choices.

  37. “Lake Shore Drive” — Aliotta Haynes Jeremiah (Vol. 2)

This breezy Chicago ode gives the second mix a regional, easygoing character distinct from its bigger rock songs. The relaxed groove is pleasant, but it has less dramatic lift and standalone urgency than much of the album.

  38. “Brandy (You’re a Fine Girl)” — Looking Glass (Vol. 2)

Looking Glass’ polished story-song has a memorable central figure and a bittersweet tension between love and an unattainable life at sea. The narrative is its strongest asset; musically, it is an agreeable soft-rock listen rather than one of the trilogy’s most powerful recordings.

  39. “Koinu no Carnival (From ‘Minute Waltz’)” — EHAMIC (Vol. 3)

EHAMIC’s playful, unusual selection is the most conspicuous stylistic outlier among Vol. 3’s rock, pop, and soul. Its distinctiveness earns it a place in the conversation, but it is less immediately legible as a stand-alone soundtrack favorite for listeners drawn to the trilogy’s familiar singalongs.

  40. “Spirit in the Sky” — Norman Greenbaum (Vol. 1)

Greenbaum’s fuzzed-out guitar and gospel-inflected chorus make this an enduring rock-radio staple. It sits low here because it is the crucial boundary case: Marvel’s Vol. 1 release announcement includes it on the album while explicitly stating it is not in the film. It belongs in a ranking of the album, but not among the trilogy’s memorable film-song moments.

  41. “Guardians Inferno” — The Sneepers featuring David Hasselhoff (Vol. 2)

This deliberately campy, disco-leaning original turns the franchise into its own joke, complete with David Hasselhoff as a guest vocalist. The commitment to parody is part of its charm, but as a song it is more of a novelty endnote than a track with the replay value or emotional depth of the other selections.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  42. “Come and Get Your Love” — Redbone (Vol. 3 listing)

Redbone’s song has already earned its higher placement because its first-film introduction and later return make it the trilogy’s clearest musical signature. Its reappearance on the Vol. 3 album is not a different recording or a new song to rank separately; it is the same track listed again in that album’s sequence.

What the albums reveal about the films

The Awesome Mixes are not simply compilations of recognizable hits. Gunn described Quill’s first tape as a collection made by his mother, songs she loved that leave him connected to his past and home. He also said that playing music on set helped actors understand a scene’s tone. That helps explain why the best placements often feel inseparable from character and editing, even when a song already works without the movie. The trilogy’s selections also widen in texture: the official Vol. 3 list includes Radiohead, Faith No More, EHAMIC, and Florence + The Machine alongside classic rock and pop, rather than relying only on the earlier albums’ familiar hits.

What counts as a Guardians soundtrack song?

The three Awesome Mix albums contain 43 tracks in total: Vol. 1 has 12, Vol. 2 has 14, and Vol. 3 has 17, according to the release tracklists from Marvel, Universal Music Germany, and Marvel. The first film’s song collection is separate from Tyler Bates’ score album, and songs heard in a film but absent from an Awesome Mix are outside this ranking. Those distinctions matter most for Vol. 1, because “Spirit in the Sky” appears on its album while the release announcement says it is not in the film.

The first Awesome Mix also made a notable commercial milestone: the Associated Press reported in March 2024 that Vol. 1 reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200. That is a historical chart achievement, not evidence that there is one objectively best order for its songs—or for all 43 tracks.
