Toby Keith’s final recorded vocal was on “Ships That Don’t Come In,” a Joe Diffie song reworked for the tribute project HIXTAPE: Vol. 3: DIFFTAPE with Luke Combs. The track was released on March 29, 2024; a behind-the-scenes video from the Nashville recording session followed on August 29, 2024.
What was Toby Keith’s final recorded vocal?
HIXTAPE identified Keith’s vocal on “Ships That Don’t Come In” as his final recorded vocal. The project’s announcement says Keith and Combs recorded their vocals in Nashville the previous year. That description is specific: it establishes a final recorded vocal, not Keith’s last song written, last release, or last public performance.
The recording was made for HIXTAPE: Vol. 3: DIFFTAPE, a 17-song collaboration project honoring Joe Diffie’s life and work. Apple Music and Spotify list Joe Diffie, HIXTAPE, Toby Keith, and Luke Combs among the track’s credits.
How to hear the recording and see the session
“Ships That Don’t Come In” appears on DIFFTAPE, which Apple Music and Spotify list as released March 29, 2024. Spotify lists the track’s duration as 3:44. Those catalog listings establish the services carrying it, but not its availability in every country.

Why Luke Combs said the recording was hard to put into words
In an August 29, 2024 report by iHeartCountry Radio, Combs reflected on joining the two artists whose music he grew up listening to: “I grew up listening to both of those guys’ music, so to be a part of this version of the song and it now be Toby’s last recording is kind of hard to put into words.”
