Robert Duvall made his film debut as Arthur “Boo” Radley in Robert Mulligan’s To Kill a Mockingbird, released on December 25, 1962. His small, largely silent role became an important early screen appearance, but it did not instantly make him a star. The film’s enduring reputation rests on more than its courtroom story: Harper Lee’s novel adaptation also follows children Scout and Jem as they gradually understand the reclusive neighbor who lives at the edge of their world.
What was Robert Duvall’s role?
Duvall played Arthur “Boo” Radley, the withdrawn neighbor whom Scout and Jem know first through rumor and fear. The film keeps him largely out of view for much of the story, placing him at the boundary of the children’s perspective rather than alongside the more public events of the trial. The American Film Institute’s catalog identifies Duvall in the role, and the Academy describes it as his film debut.
Calling it a breakout role can be misleading if “breakout” suggests immediate stardom. It is more precise to call Boo an important debut: a brief, restrained performance in a major film, before Duvall’s later career. The film received major Academy Award recognition, including nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Gregory Peck, and adapted screenplay; Duvall was not nominated for this role.
How does Boo fit into the film’s legal drama?
The adaptation, directed by Robert Mulligan and written by Horton Foote from Harper Lee’s novel, sets the case against Tom Robinson within a story filtered through the children’s changing understanding of their community. Courtroom events expose racial injustice and the limits of the town’s legal system; the Boo Radley strand asks the children to reconsider the frightening stories they have accepted about someone they barely know.

That contrast gives the film two related but distinct forms of justice. The trial concerns what the adults and institutions do in public. Boo’s story develops through the children’s observations and assumptions, and ultimately through his actions toward them. The National Endowment for the Arts’ teaching resource connects those threads by asking readers to consider how Boo’s past history of violence foreshadows his way of protecting Jem and Scout.
Why is the film often called one of the great courtroom dramas?
The American Film Institute’s 2023 Movie Club page says the film appears on five AFI lists celebrating excellence. Among them is AFI’s list of greatest courtroom dramas, where To Kill a Mockingbird is ranked first. That is a notable institutional ranking, not a universal or statistically measured verdict about the most influential legal drama ever made.

AFI also places the film on lists recognizing inspiring stories, film scores, and great films. On AFI’s greatest-films list, it ranked 25th in 2007, compared with 34th in the 1997 edition. Those rankings document the institution’s assessment over time; they do not quantify the film’s influence on later movies, legal culture, or audiences.

The Academy describes the film as one that would define Gregory Peck’s career and identifies Duvall’s appearance as his debut in feature films. Together, those facts show the different scale of the two performances in the film’s public legacy: Peck’s Atticus Finch is central to the Academy’s account, while Duvall’s Boo is a consequential but limited early role.

The available institutional rankings support calling the film a highly honored and enduring courtroom drama. They do not establish, by themselves, that it is the single most influential legal drama of all time. For readers considering the adaptation, the NEA resource offers a useful question about Harper Lee’s epigraph, “Lawyers, I suppose, were children once”: how the children’s point of view sits beside the novel’s and film’s treatment of law and justice.
