Vivian Liberto was Johnny Cash’s first wife and the mother of their four daughters. The 2020 documentary My Darling Vivian, directed by Matt Riddlehoover, tells her story through interviews with their daughters and archival footage and photographs. Its account also addresses the isolation and racist harassment Liberto experienced, as described by the filmmakers.
Who was Vivian Liberto?
Liberto married Johnny Cash on August 7, 1954, at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in San Antonio, Texas, according to Johnny Cash’s official timeline. They had four daughters during their marriage.
The film’s press-kit synopsis says Liberto and Cash met in San Antonio in 1951, when she was a Catholic schoolgirl and he was an Air Force cadet. It describes them corresponding while Cash was stationed in Germany. Those details are the documentary’s published account of their courtship.
What does My Darling Vivian cover?
The documentary focuses on Liberto’s experience within the marriage and family, rather than presenting her only as a supporting figure in Cash’s career. The filmmakers’ synopsis describes Cash touring regularly by 1961 while Liberto was at home in Casitas Springs with their four young daughters. It portrays her as facing isolation, difficult surroundings, resentment over Cash’s absences, and racist harassment connected to how others perceived her race. These are claims and themes presented by the filmmakers; the synopsis alone does not independently establish them.
