The diamond thieves left behind was the Regent, a 140.64-metric-carat gem in the Louvre’s collection. It was not among the eight objects stolen during the 19 October 2025 break-in. The “curse” attached to the stone comes from a disputed legend, not an established fact; the roughly US$60 million figure is an estimate attributed to Sotheby’s by Reuters, not an official Louvre valuation.
What is the Regent Diamond?
The Regent is a nearly colorless, rectangular cushion-shaped diamond displayed in the Louvre’s collection. The museum’s collection record gives its weight as 140.64 metric carats and says it was discovered in India in 1698. Before it was cut, it reportedly weighed 426 carats. It was cut in England between 1704 and 1706.
In 1717, Philippe d’Orléans, then Regent of France, acquired the stone. It later appeared in French royal and imperial regalia, including the crowns of Louis XV and Louis XVI, and in settings associated with Napoleon and later regimes. When the French State sold most of the Crown Jewels in 1887, it retained the Regent and assigned it to the Louvre. The Louvre’s collection record was last updated in 2025.
Why is it called “cursed”?
A popular tale says an enslaved worker found the diamond, hid it in a wound in his leg, and was killed by a sea captain who stole the stone. The story is folklore, not a verified account of the Regent’s discovery.

In a Louvre-produced podcast, chief curator Anne Dion calls the leg-wound story implausible, saying it would be impossible to hide such a mass in a leg. The museum’s discussion also notes that the precise circumstances of the discovery and the diamond’s route before it was acquired by Thomas Pitt are uncertain. The legend may make for a dramatic label, but it does not establish that the stone is cursed—or provide a dependable history of how it was found. Listen to the Louvre podcast, “Le Régent – Les Enquêtes du Louvre”.
Why did thieves leave the Regent at the Louvre?
The 19 October 2025 break-in targeted two high-security display cases in the Galerie d’Apollon. The Louvre said eight objects were stolen; Empress Eugénie’s crown was left behind during the escape. The Regent was also left in its case. Reuters reported that Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau said she had no explanation for why the diamond was not taken. The available accounts establish that it was left behind, but not why.

The Louvre’s incident statement and INTERPOL’s notice of 21 October 2025 described eight stolen items. Those reports capture the situation at the time; they do not establish the objects’ recovery status as of October 2026.
What does “$60 million” mean?
Reuters reported on 19 October 2025 that Sotheby’s estimated the Regent was worth more than US$60 million. That is a reported estimate, not a confirmed sale price or an official Louvre valuation.

The Louvre separately put the financial loss from the theft at €88 million on 21 October 2025. That figure concerns the stolen objects as a whole, not the Regent, which was not stolen. The two figures describe different things and should not be conflated. Reuters’ report on the theft and Sotheby’s estimate and the Louvre’s update on the loss estimate provide their respective attributions.

The diamond has a documented theft episode of its own, separate from the 2025 break-in. The Louvre says the Regent was stolen in 1792, found in 1793, and recovered by Napoleon in 1801. Its history therefore includes periods of concealment and recovery, but those events are evidence of theft and changing custody—not proof of a supernatural curse.
