Spoilers ahead. At the end of Netflix’s 2024 film Mary, Mary and Joseph escape Herod’s soldiers with the newborn Jesus, who survives the king’s attempt to capture him. The family reaches Jerusalem for Jesus’ presentation at the temple, where a prophecy about the child leads into Mary’s closing thought: love brings suffering, but ultimately “will save the world.”
How does Mary end?
Mary gives birth while she and Joseph are in hiding. As Herod’s forces search for the Messiah and round up children and newborns, the couple flee toward Jerusalem with Jesus. The soldiers do not capture him. Netflix Tudum’s December 6, 2024 ending recap describes their escape and the film’s closing temple sequence.
The story also returns to Herod. The angel Gabriel confronts the king and tells him his time is ending. Herod’s pursuit has failed: Jesus is alive and beyond his grasp.
What happens at the temple?
Mary and Joseph present Jesus at the temple in Jerusalem. Simeon speaks a prophecy about the child’s effect on Israel. The scene alludes to Luke 2:34; the NIV text reads: “This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against.” That wording is specific to the NIV translation.

The prophecy and Mary’s final reflection are separate ideas in the ending: Simeon’s words connect the scene to the Gospel passage, while Mary’s closing statement expresses the film’s own thematic emphasis.
What does Mary’s final line mean?
Mary says, “Love will cost you dearly; it will pierce your heart,” then concludes, “But in the end, love will save the world.” The line acknowledges the danger and grief Mary faces as she protects Jesus, while giving the ending a hopeful resolution. Her love is presented as the counterforce to Herod’s violence—and, in the film’s framing, as the source of hope for the future.

How does the film adapt the Nativity story?
Mary is a dramatized biblical epic, not a scene-by-scene rendering of Gospel details. Netflix says the filmmakers replaced donkeys with horses and shaped Herod’s search as an action-oriented pursuit to reach a broader audience. Those are cinematic choices, not details established by the Gospel text. Director D.J. Caruso said he aimed to portray Mary “in her most human and relatable form,” as reported by Netflix Tudum.
