Erik Per Sullivan, who played Dewey on Malcolm in the Middle, left acting after the series and has kept his life private. The clearest public updates come from former co-stars Jane Kaczmarek and Justin Berfield—not from Sullivan himself. Kaczmarek has said he is well and studying Victorian literature; cast members also say he declined the revival.
Who is Erik Per Sullivan?
Sullivan played Dewey, the youngest brother in Fox’s Malcolm in the Middle. The sitcom ran for seven seasons, from 2000 to 2006. The Independent reported that it received seven Emmy Awards from 33 nominations in 2025. The Independent
After the show, Sullivan stepped away from acting. Parade reported that his only post-series acting role was in the 2010 film Twelve; this is secondary reporting, rather than an independently audited filmography. Parade
Where is Erik Per Sullivan now?
There is no reliable public account establishing Sullivan’s exact current location. In a 2024 interview, former co-star Jane Kaczmarek said, “He’s well, he’s very, very well.” She also said that he played Dewey from age seven to fourteen and “wasn’t interested in acting, at all.” These are Kaczmarek’s comments, reported by The Independent in 2025—not a first-person account from Sullivan. Kaczmarek said Sullivan attended a “very prestigious American university,” but that he had asked friends to keep its identity private. She also reported that he was doing graduate work in Victorian literature. In 2026, Variety quoted her describing him as “studying Dickens and is an incredible student.” His enrollment and studies are therefore known through her account; the university has not been publicly identified. The Independent reported a Boston sighting on March 26, 2025, during publicity for the revival. That establishes only that one sighting was reported on that date; it does not establish where Sullivan lives or where he is now. The Independent

Why isn’t he in the Malcolm in the Middle revival?
According to cast members, Sullivan declined the offer to return as Dewey. In 2026, Variety quoted Kaczmarek saying, “They offered him buckets of money to come back, and he just said, ‘No thank you.’” Justin Berfield, who played Reese, told Variety, “He wants to stay out of the business.” Both statements describe the decision through former co-stars; Sullivan has not provided a detailed public explanation in the available reporting. Variety
The revival recast Dewey: The Independent reported that Caleb Ellsworth-Clark took the role. That is a casting change, not evidence about Sullivan’s personal circumstances. The Independent

What does “reclusive” mean in this case?
“Reclusive” is a label often used in coverage of Sullivan’s absence from public life, not a diagnosis or a verified explanation of his motives. The available reporting supports a narrower account: he stopped pursuing acting, has chosen not to return to the revival according to cast members, and has kept details such as his university’s name private.
There is no established public information here about his relationships, finances, daily routine, or exact whereabouts. Nor is there a first-person account explaining why he left acting. Treating those unknowns as confirmed facts would go beyond what the named sources have reported.
