Spoilers for The Umbrella Academy season 3. In season 3, Elliot Page’s character is called Viktor Hargreeves, and the series depicts Viktor’s transition in its story. Netflix announced the character’s name and transition before the season premiered; the change is more than a cast-credit update.
What changes for Page’s character in season 3?
Netflix announced on March 29, 2022, that Page’s character—known previously as Number Seven—would be known as Viktor Hargreeves and would transition in the upcoming season. Netflix framed the character’s new name as reflecting Page’s own journey. Netflix’s announcement explains the naming change.
The show makes Viktor’s transition part of the narrative. Netflix’s official clip listing identifies a scene titled “Viktor’s Transition” from season 3, episode 2, and describes Viktor coming out as his true self. Watch the official season 3, episode 2 clip.
How did the production approach the storyline?
Showrunner Steve Blackman said the season 3 scripts were already complete when Page told him he was transitioning. In Blackman’s account, Page did not prescribe a plot choice and told him, “I trust you. Do what you think is right for the character in the show.” Blackman then sought advice from GLAAD’s Nick Adams and worked with trans writer, novelist, and journalist Thomas Page McBee, whom he described as guiding the team toward an authentic story. He also said the production collaborated with Page. Blackman discusses the process in Netflix Tudum’s season 3 interview, which contains major season spoilers.

What did the showrunner want the story to do?
Blackman said he wanted the storyline to show a family accepting someone unconditionally as transgender, without making transition the whole story of the series. That is his stated creative aim; it should not be mistaken for a claim about how every viewer experienced the storyline.
How does Viktor’s transition fit into the season’s other storylines?
The transition is one strand of a season with a separate, large-scale science-fiction plot. The Hargreeves return to an altered present, encounter the Sparrow Academy, and face a threat to the universe. Viktor’s powers are also distinct from his transition: Netflix’s character guide describes his ability to turn sound into powerful energy blasts and says Sir Reginald Hargreeves used medication to suppress it. Netflix’s character guide and season 3 overview describe those elements.
