Ted Lange has not identified the famous guest star who, he recalled, pulled away when Lange offered a handshake on The Love Boat. The story comes from Lange’s account on the Still Here Hollywood podcast; the clues he shared do not establish the guest’s identity.
What did Ted Lange say happened?
Lange told Steve Kmetko on the Still Here Hollywood podcast that co-star Gavin MacLeod had advised him and Bernie Kopell to welcome visiting guest stars, show them where craft services and the makeup room were, and help them as needed. Lange said he followed that advice when a guest arrived.
As the podcast transcript renders Lange’s account: “I went up to a guest star. I said, hey, my name is Ted Lash. Welcome to the show. And he went like this and walked away.” The transcript spells the name “Ted Lash”; secondary coverage renders it as “Ted Lange.”
Lange said he was wearing a red jacket like others on set. He speculated that the guest may have mistaken him for an extra, but he did not know why the guest pulled away. About half an hour later, Lange recalled, a director introduced him to the guest as his scene partner, and the guest greeted him. Lange’s reaction, as transcribed, was: “Well, who does that? To anybody? Who does that? To anybody?” The podcast episode transcript is the source for Lange’s account.

Who was the guest star?
Lange did not name the guest in the interview transcript. In secondary coverage, he is quoted describing the person as a “fairly big guy” who “used to have a golf and tennis tournament.” Those clues are not enough to identify someone reliably.
Parade reports that fans speculated about several people and that Lange denied the suggestion that it was Gene Kelly. Kelly should not be identified as the guest: the interview discusses him separately, and Lange spoke positively about him.

What the story does—and does not—establish
The handshake and later greeting are part of Lange’s recollection, not independent evidence of the guest’s motive. Lange offered the red-jacket explanation as a guess, not a confirmed reason. MeTV’s September 5, 2025 summary likewise recounts the refusal, Lange’s speculation, and the later introduction as scene partners: MeTV’s account.
