Their disagreement ends in a fire that devastates the witches’ home on Brendok. The episode tells that night from the coven’s point of view; episode 7 later adds important context about the Jedi’s role.
Spoilers for season 1, episode 3, “Destiny.” The TV-14 episode, released June 11, 2024, is set 16 years before the series’ present-day story. Its flashback centers on Osha and Mae as children in Mother Aniseya’s coven. StarWars.com’s episode guide identifies the episode’s setting and timeline.
What happens on Brendok in “Destiny”?
Osha and Mae are being raised in a secluded fortress by Mother Aniseya and her coven. The twins are expected to take on leadership in their community, but they do not share the same feelings about that future. Mae is more comfortable with the path laid out for them; Osha wants the freedom to choose another life.
Their community describes the energy connecting living beings as the “Thread.” In the coven’s understanding, it binds people to one another and to destiny. It is their vocabulary and worldview for a power the Jedi call the Force—not evidence that the series replaces the broader Star Wars concept. StarWars.com’s episode feature describes the Thread as tying people to destiny and each other.

Why do the Jedi come to the coven?
During the coven’s Ascension ceremony, Jedi Indara, Padawan Torbin, Kelnacca, and Sol arrive at the fortress. They ask to test the twins’ abilities and assess whether they might train as Jedi. To the Jedi, this is an evaluation of Force potential; to the coven, the visitors intrude on a sacred moment and challenge the community’s authority over the girls.
The coven tells Osha and Mae to fail the test deliberately. Osha does not follow that instruction. She answers openly, passes, and receives an invitation to join the Jedi Order on Coruscant. Mae, who fears losing her sister, sees Osha’s choice as a threat to the life they have shared.

Why does Osha leave the witches?
Osha leaves because she wants to choose a future beyond the one expected of her in the coven. The Jedi offer a path she actively wants, rather than simply an escape imposed on her. Her decision is not a rejection of Mae as a person; the episode makes clear that the twins’ conflicting desires are precisely what make the choice painful.
Mother Aniseya captures the dispute over authority when she tells Torbin: “This isn’t about good or bad. This is about power and who is allowed to use it.” The line speaks to the clash between the Jedi’s institutional claim to identify and train Force-sensitive children and the coven’s belief that the twins belong within its community.

Did Mae start the fire?
Yes. Angry and afraid that Osha will leave, Mae locks her sister in their room and sets fire to Osha’s journal. The blaze spreads through the fortress. Sol rescues Osha; Mae is believed dead, but the official episode feature confirms that she survives.
The episode connects the fire to Mae’s fear and anguish, but it does not establish that she intended every consequence of the catastrophe. Her threat to Osha belongs to a child in the middle of an overwhelming rupture; the scene does not require treating her as a fully formed adult antagonist. Episode 3 presents her act as the trigger for the disaster without showing every cause or participant in the coven’s deaths.

What does episode 3 leave out about the disaster?
“Destiny” stays close to the sisters and the coven’s experience of the night. Episode 7, “Choice,” later revisits the events from a different narrative position. Its official episode guide says the Jedi were investigating a vergence, that the twins’ bloodline prompted events, and that a battle pitted Jedi against Jedi before most of the witches died.
That later account broadens the picture of what happened; it should not be folded into what episode 3 itself shows. The flashback’s limited perspective helps explain why the fire first appears to account for the tragedy, while leaving the larger chain of events unresolved until the series returns to Brendok.

How the Ascension ceremony was brought to life
The ceremony’s luminous visual effect has a production name, not an in-universe one. Lucasfilm visual-effects supervisor Julian Foddy said the team called it the “Force Aurora,” and connected its visual inspiration to auroral photography by astronaut Tim Peake. He described the goal this way: “We didn’t want it to be a big magic event. It had to feel natural like it could almost be real.” Lucasfilm’s production feature discusses the effect and its intended look.
