Mr Ring-a-Ding is the cheerful cartoon star who steps out of a 1930s-style short film in Doctor Who’s “Lux.” His sunny screen persona hides his real identity: Lux Imperator, a god of light and member of the Pantheon. Voiced by Alan Cumming, he can turn people into images, trap them inside film, and manipulate the cinema’s light.
Which episode introduces Mr Ring-a-Ding?
Mr Ring-a-Ding appears in “Lux,” Season 2, Episode 2, which premiered on 19 April 2025. The episode sends the Doctor and Belinda Chandra to Miami in 1952, where fifteen cinema-goers have vanished from an abandoned cinema. The official episode guide identifies the story and its setting. “Lux” is the episode in which he appears; the available episode information does not establish that it is the show’s latest episode as of October 2026.
Is Mr Ring-a-Ding really Lux?
Yes. Mr Ring-a-Ding is the cartoon-like form and persona of Lux Imperator, a member of the Pantheon: a group of godlike beings in the series. The Doctor initially describes him as “light come to life.” His cheerful entertainer act belongs to a fictional 1935 cartoon, “Mr Ring-a-Ding Goes to Town,” but the being behind it is no ordinary animated character. The official character profile names him Lux Imperator and connects him to the Pantheon.
How does Lux enter the real world?
In the episode, moonlight falls into the cinema’s projection, and the cartoon turns sinister: Mr Ring-a-Ding addresses the audience and leaves the screen. The abandoned cinema’s projectionist, Reginald Pye, has been supplying Lux with old films. In exchange, Lux has given Pye a living projection of his late wife.

The boundary between film and reality is central to the threat. Lux can capture people in strips of film and trap the Doctor and Belinda in a two-dimensional cartoon world. The episode turns the cinema itself into part of his domain, rather than treating the cartoon as a character who simply appears in the auditorium.
What are Mr Ring-a-Ding’s powers?
- Control of light and film: Lux manipulates cinema light and uses film as a means to contain people.

How is Lux stopped?
Belinda and Reginald help rescue the Doctor. Reginald sets the film stock alight. The fire damages the cinema and exposes Lux to sunlight. The official character account describes the absorption of the Doctor’s regeneration energy as making Lux infinite and ultimately harmless; the episode guide says he dissipates and his captives are freed. The resolution is therefore better understood as Lux becoming light without end and harmless—not as a straightforward conventional death.

Alan Cumming voices Mr Ring-a-Ding. The character’s look draws on the 1930s Fleischer Studios animation era, while the episode shifts his appearance from hand-drawn cartoon techniques to a grotesque 3D form integrated with live action. Showrunner Russell T Davies praised the character’s combination of comedy and menace: “His design. His life! His hat!! His energy, his comedy, his darkness, his joy. There are plenty of live-action characters with only half of that!”
Cumming’s official interview playfully calls the episode “Fab-tastic” and describes it as about 1000 exclamation marks; that is his exuberant reaction, not a production statistic.
