There is no single definitive ranking of the best thrillers of 2024, but critics’ year-end selections and award lists offer a strong starting point. These picks span domestic danger, historical crime, espionage and high-stakes contemporary suspense, so the best choice depends on the kind of tension you want.
How to choose a 2024 thriller
“Thriller” covers very different reading experiences. Some books build tension around an investigation; others put characters in immediate physical danger. Foreword Reviews describes thrillers and suspense novels as works driven by tension, plotting and continuous suspense, distinguishing them from mysteries by the constant presence of physical threat. That is one useful lens, not a universal rule: year-end lists also group crime, mystery and thriller titles together.
- For domestic peril: look for a confined setting and a threat close to home.
- For historical crime: choose a story shaped by a particular time and place.
- For espionage: expect political danger, secrets and shifting loyalties.
- For high-stakes contemporary suspense: look for fast-moving events with consequences beyond one household.
The Guardian’s 2024 roundup ranges across crime and thrillers, while Kirkus titles its selection “Best Mysteries and Thrillers of 2024.” The selections below are curated recommendations from those lists and award programs, not a shared ranking or a claim of universal consensus.

The Guardian highlights this debut about a woman and her young children hiding from an intruder in an isolated house. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why these are recommendations, not a definitive ranking
The Guardian’s list sits under a broad crime-and-thriller umbrella; Kirkus combines mysteries and thrillers; ITW and Foreword Reviews recognize titles through separate award categories. Those sources give readers credible ways into the year’s books, but they do not supply a common score or comparable sales, readership or vote figures. List placement and award recognition should not be read as proof of popularity or a head-to-head result.

Those distinctions follow the descriptions available from the selections; they are not standardized ratings of suspense, originality or character work.
