F. Gary Gray’s 2024 Netflix film may work as undemanding background diversion; as a caper, it never gives its elaborate premise enough wit or character to take off.
What is Lift about?
Directed by F. Gary Gray and released on Netflix on January 12, 2024, Lift stars Kevin Hart as Cyrus Whitaker, a professional thief leading a crew in an attempt to steal $500 million in gold from a vault aboard a passenger plane at 40,000 feet. Netflix’s official film page supplies the airborne caper; Netflix Tudum adds the recruitment hook: the crew is enlisted to help prevent a terrorist attack by robbing the rich.
That premise is the film’s clearest asset. A heist on a plane offers immediate visual stakes and a natural puzzle: how do you move people, gold and a plan through a confined space in midair? The film wants the answer to be a breezy mix of tricks, technology and swagger. But a high concept only pays off when the rules are clear and the complications feel earned. Here, the machinery of the caper often seems more important than making its turns legible or consequential.
Why does the heist fail to take off?
The plan has spectacle, not enough clarity
The $500 million target and 40,000-foot setting promise an outsized caper, and the film keeps reaching for the next flourish. Yet scale is not the same thing as suspense. When a twist arrives without enough groundwork, or a logistical hurdle is brushed aside rather than made dramatically meaningful, the viewer has less reason to invest in whether the plan succeeds. The plane makes the setup distinctive; it cannot, by itself, make each step ingenious.

The crew is a cast before it is a crew
Alongside Hart, the ensemble includes Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Vincent D’Onofrio, Úrsula Corberó and Billy Magnussen. These are appealing performers for a glamorous caper, but the characters are not written with enough depth or distinctive team chemistry to turn the roster into a compelling unit. That leaves the film leaning on star presence and brisk movement where sharper relationships, motives and comic interplay could have supplied momentum.
The tone keeps the stakes at arm’s length
Lift aims for playful rather than gritty, an appropriate instinct for a knowingly oversized streaming diversion. The trouble is that comedy and action do not consistently reinforce one another. The jokes do not always sharpen the characters, while the danger does not always make the jokes land harder. The result is a film that feels busy without becoming especially tense or funny.

What did critics think of Lift?
Rotten Tomatoes’ page displayed a 30% Tomatometer from 71 reviews and a 33% audience score from more than 1,000 ratings when checked on October 4, 2026. Those are changing aggregator snapshots, not permanent measures of the film. The site’s consensus faults the thin character writing and formulaic, haphazard story, while allowing that the movie may serve as “mindless entertainment.” Rotten Tomatoes’ review page is the source for those figures and that consensus.
There is room for a more forgiving response. In a January 12, 2024 review, TIME critic Stephanie Zacharek describes the film as an absurd, low-expectation diversion and points to its attractive performers and glamorous locations. That is a useful distinction: a movie can be narratively flimsy and still offer a little polished escapism. The spectacle and cast are real pleasures, even if they do not repair the script. Is Lift worth watching?
If you want a tight, clever heist whose twists reward close attention, Lift is a poor bet. Its central idea is more engaging than the writing that has to support it, and its crew never becomes as distinctive as the cast suggests it could. If you are in the mood for a glossy, deliberately implausible caper and can accept that the fun is lighter than the premise promises, it may pass as a casual watch.
Lift is a Netflix film, though catalog availability can vary by territory and change over time; check Netflix’s title page for current access. The film’s failure is not that it dares to be ridiculous. It is that it rarely makes the ridiculousness feel inventive enough to matter.
