The official Borderlands trailer makes a promising first case for the film: it puts familiar game characters on Pandora and gives them a clear reason to join forces. That recognizable setup can make the trailer appealing even if you have doubts about a video-game adaptation. But the premise alone cannot establish whether its visuals, humor, or action capture the games, and a trailer is not a verdict on the finished film.
What the trailer establishes
Lionsgate published the official trailer on February 21, 2024. Its central hook is a team-up: Lilith returns to Pandora to find Atlas’s missing daughter, with a group of misfits joining her. The studio’s official trailer identifies Cate Blanchett as Lilith, Kevin Hart as Roland, Ariana Greenblatt as Tiny Tina, Florian Munteanu as Krieg, Jamie Lee Curtis as Tannis, Jack Black as Claptrap, and Edgar Ramírez as Atlas.
The studio’s official synopsis calls Lilith “an infamous bounty hunter with a mysterious past” returning to “the most chaotic planet in the galaxy.” It says the group faces alien species and bandits while seeking one of Pandora’s explosive secrets. Those details make the premise legible: a returning bounty hunter, an unruly world, and an unlikely crew on a dangerous search.
Does it look like the games?
The connection is more than a shared title. The film is based on the Borderlands video-game franchise, and the trailer description names characters central to the adaptation’s setup. Take-Two Interactive reported more than 87 million copies “sold-in to date” for the game franchise in an investor announcement dated August 20, 2024. Recognizable names and a return to Pandora establish the adaptation’s foundations, but they do not by themselves prove fidelity. Whether the trailer’s look, pacing, jokes, weapons, and action feel like the games is a judgment that depends on the footage itself; the official synopsis confirms the premise, not those qualities. The strongest supported reason to call the setup “very Borderlands” is its combination of a chaotic planet, a mismatched group, and a high-stakes search.
Why the trailer may be more appealing than expected
A premise with a clear objective gives the ensemble a useful dramatic engine: Lilith is looking for Atlas’s daughter, and the others become part of the mission. That is a more concrete hook than a trailer that relies only on introducing a collection of characters. The lineup also makes the adaptation’s intent easy to read for someone who knows the games, while the misfits-and-danger setup gives newcomers a basic route into the story.

“Surprisingly good” is best treated as a viewer’s reaction, not an established consensus. The official materials support an intriguing setup, but they cannot substantiate claims about particular visual gags, shot choices, sound, or the quality of the trailer’s editing. Nor does an effective teaser guarantee that the feature works as a whole.

The completed 2024 film’s critical reception is a separate question from whether its trailer makes the premise attractive. Rotten Tomatoes lists Borderlands as a PG-13 science-fiction/action/adventure/comedy with a runtime of 1 hour 42 minutes and gives it a negative critics-consensus characterization.
