Disney says parts of the land are set to open in 2027, but the suspended door-vault coaster will still be under construction; no exact opening day has been announced.
When will Monstropolis open?
Disney’s latest update, published August 16, 2026, says parts of Monstropolis are scheduled to open in 2027. That does not mean the entire land or its headline coaster will be ready then: Disney says construction on the coaster will continue. The company has not given an exact opening date or specified which components will be operating on the first day.
The project is planned for the south side of Hollywood Studios, in an area affected by phased closures on Grand Avenue. Those closures are historical: Disney set May 10, 2025 as the last dining day for Melrose’s Ristorante Italiano, and June 7, 2025 as the final day for Muppet*Vision 3D and PizzeRizzo. They are not current schedules.
What attractions and experiences are announced?
The door-vault suspended coaster
The signature ride is a suspended coaster intended to carry guests through the monster factory and recreate the film’s door-vault sequence. At the August 2024 D23 announcement, then-Disney Experiences Chairman Josh D’Amaro said, “You’ll go into the factory and experience the first suspended coaster ever in a Disney park.” Disney’s August 2026 update says construction is continuing. The sources reviewed do not give a ride duration, height requirement, capacity or separate opening date.

“Welcome to Monstropolis” at the Glob Theater

What restaurants, shops and city details are planned?
Food and drink
- Harryhausen’s: A restaurant planned to feature a new Audio-Animatronics sushi chef. Disney says the menu will include more than sushi, but has not published the menu. Michael Hundgen, Vice President Creative, described it as “A menu unlike anything else we offer at Walt Disney World.”
- Archie’s Scare Pig Pizza: A pizza location announced by Disney; specific menu and operating details have not been provided.
Shopping and atmosphere
- Scareporium: A souvenir shop is planned, but Disney has not announced its inventory.
- Monsters University Alumni Club: The club is among the named features, though its operating format has not been described.
- City streets and storefronts: Disney says the land will include streets, storefronts and working industries designed to evoke Monstropolis.
What is the story behind H.U.M.A.N. Day?
The land’s story takes place after the original film, when Mike Wazowski and James P. “Sulley” Sullivan have helped transform monster society by showing that laughter is more powerful than screams. H.U.M.A.N. Day is the celebration welcoming human guests into Monstropolis. Disney’s June 4, 2026 press release calls it “a citywide celebration that brings humans into the monster world for the first time.” Disney’s August 2026 post spells out the acronym as “Humans Understanding Monsters Are Nice”; its June 2026 release uses “Humans Understand Monsters Are Nice.”
