Spoilers for “Journey the Rivers of Iron,” Season 2, Episode 4 of 1923. Alexandra boards a train toward Montana after a robbery, while Spencer’s own journey is stalled by a sheriff in Fort Worth. Back at the ranch, Zane survives a desperate operation and Elizabeth learns she is pregnant. Meanwhile, Whitfield’s plans for Montana turn land theft and body disposal into part of the same threat.
Montana: Whitfield’s resort plan puts the ranch in his sights
Whitfield sells wealthy men on transforming Montana into a tourism destination, including a winter resort built around the region’s attractions. The plan depends on acquiring Dutton land, so he tells Banner to assemble the promised army. The development pitch is more than a business scheme: it puts Whitfield’s ambitions directly against the family’s home.
Whitfield also names a remote, lawless part of Montana as a place to leave bodies. TVLine connects this disposal site to the “train station” familiar from Yellowstone. That is one of the episode’s two trains: not a train carrying a character, but the euphemistic destination for people Whitfield wants erased.
New York: Alexandra is robbed but catches her train
The man who followed Alexandra into a restroom attacks her, takes her money and valuables—including her emergency watch—and leaves her unconscious. When she wakes, her train is about to leave. She runs to the platform and manages to board it, continuing toward Spencer and Montana despite the robbery.
The train is a literal step closer to a reunion, but the episode makes clear how precarious Alexandra’s journey is: she has lost the watch and other resources she might need along the way.

Texas: Spencer is pulled into a sheriff’s trap
After Luca is killed in a bootlegging confrontation, a sheriff stops Spencer, who had been in the truck. Paramount+’s episode listing identifies the encounter as happening in Fort Worth. Recaps report that the sheriff forces Spencer to drive the whiskey truck toward the city as part of a plan to catch other bootleggers.
Spencer is alive and still trying to get back to Alexandra, but the lawman’s scheme delays that return. While Alexandra gets aboard a train moving toward Montana, Spencer is diverted in Texas—the other half of the episode’s train-and-journey tension.

At the ranch: Zane survives, and Elizabeth is pregnant
Zane’s operation
Dr. Miller attempts to relieve dangerous swelling in Zane’s brain by drilling into his skull and draining fluid. Zane wakes during the painful procedure, but he survives. Cowboys & Indians reports Jack’s exchange with Dr. Shilling during the surgery: “I got to tell you, doc — I didn’t have a lot of faith in that working.” Shilling replies, “Neither did I.”
The scene is a fictional emergency, not guidance for real medical treatment. In a TV Insider interview published March 16, 2025, Zane actor Brian Geraghty described the practical prosthetic used for the scene, saying it was “so perfectly you” in reference to how closely it matched his hair and skin.
