Recent coverage connects Mary Austin to Freddie Mercury’s former home, Garden Lodge, in Kensington, but it does not confirm that she has moved or identify a new address. In a September 1, 2026 interview, Austin said she was ready to move on after living there for more than 30 years. A separate report that day said the house remained for sale.
Where is Mary Austin now?
The clearest answer is that Austin’s next home has not been confirmed publicly in the sources available. The Guardian’s September 1, 2026 interview described her as having lived at Garden Lodge for more than three decades and quoted her saying, “I don’t have a clue what the future holds, but I know it’s finally time to move on.” That states her intention; it does not establish that she has left.
In the interview, Austin, then 75, described the years since Mercury’s death as solitary: “I’m a loner. I keep myself company.” Those are her own reflections, not a complete account of her private life. The Guardian’s interview is the source for her remarks and reported circumstances.
What is known about Garden Lodge?
Mercury left Garden Lodge and his possessions to Austin. According to the Guardian, he had told her she would inherit the house and half of his fortune and future royalties. Austin recalled that she initially said she did not want the house, but later accepted it as her responsibility.

The latest reported sale status in the cited coverage is dated September 1, 2026: House & Garden said the eight-bedroom property was still on the market, nearly two years after it was first listed in February 2024. Pre-vetted buyers were invited to make private offers above £30 million. That figure is an offer threshold, not a confirmed sale price, and the report does not show that a sale has since taken place. The Associated Press covered the initial listing in March 2024, reporting that offers above £30 million were being sought.
Neither the sale listing nor Austin’s stated wish to move establishes where she will live next. The reporting does not confirm a completed move or provide a new address. See the House & Garden update and the Associated Press report on the listing.
What is Mary Austin doing now?
Austin is helping bring Mercury’s creative archive to readers through the 2026 book Freddie Mercury: A Life in Lyrics: The Official Creative Legacy of Freddie Mercury. The Guardian reported that she opened one of four silver trunks in 2022, found handwritten lyrics and asked her sons to go through the archive on her behalf. Rolling Stone Canada describes the book as credited to Freddie Mercury with Mary Austin, featuring photographs of important items from his collection and tracing their friendship. Check the author credit on the edition you choose, since the cited coverage describes it differently.
The book concerns Mercury’s lyrics, archive and relationship with Austin; it is not a source for her current address. Read Rolling Stone Canada’s feature on the archive and book.

What else has Austin shared about her life?
The Guardian interview describes Austin as the mother of two sons, Richard and Jamie. Mercury was Richard’s godfather, and Austin was pregnant with Jamie when Mercury died. Jamie told the Guardian that she moved to Garden Lodge when he was six months old. The interview also says she separated from the boys’ father before Jamie’s birth and later married, though that marriage did not last.

The location has not been made public. Austin told the Guardian that Mercury did not want it disclosed and that she had kept his wishes, declining to tell even his surviving family where his ashes were scattered. She intends to keep that information private; rumored locations should not be treated as fact.
