Rien ranks first for the scale of her Tao power and the threat she represents across the final conflict. Gabimaru is the strongest human combatant on this list overall, but the Tensen’s Tao, regeneration and specialized techniques make “strongest” dependent on matchup and knowledge—not reputation alone.
How this strength ranking works
The order weighs demonstrated offensive ability, adaptability, Tao control, survivability and performance against dangerous opponents. It assumes a serious one-on-one encounter, each character at their strongest demonstrated point, with their usual abilities and equipment. It does not assume advance knowledge of an opponent’s hidden weakness. Team victories and specialized counters count as evidence of threat or skill, but not as proof that one fighter could reproduce the same result alone.
These measures are not interchangeable. The official anime character profiles call Gabimaru Iwagakure’s former strongest ninja, while Asaemon ranks formally place Eizen first, Shugen second, Jikka third, Shion fourth, Senta fifth, Fuchi ninth, Tenza tenth and Sagiri twelfth. Those titles and reputations help describe standing; they do not settle every matchup or establish a universal power scale. The profiles name the Tensen’s individual Tao disciplines, but do not provide a definitive order among them. This countdown is therefore reasoned interpretation, not canon.

The island makes reputation an especially imperfect guide. VIZ editor David Brothers wrote that “the island takes them both out of their comfort zones and forces them to use their abilities in new and intriguing ways.” The trial combines an elixir search with deadly creatures, rival convicts and unfamiliar threats, so tactical adaptation and Tao knowledge matter alongside raw force.
20 strongest Hell’s Paradise characters, ranked
1. Rien
Rien is the most formidable overall threat in the story. Her immense Tao and influence over the island’s central conflict put her above fighters whose strongest advantages are physical skill or a narrow technique. Her position is not based merely on being a Tensen: it reflects the scale of her power and the difficulty of overcoming her. A prepared group with the right understanding of Tao has a better chance than an isolated fighter who meets her without that knowledge.
2. Gabimaru
Gabimaru combines exceptional physical ability, lethal ninja training and the capacity to adapt under pressure. The official profile calls him Iwagakure’s former strongest ninja and identifies “The Hollow” as his feared name; VIZ describes him as one of feudal Japan’s deadliest ninja. Those credentials explain why he belongs near the top, but they do not make him automatically superior to every Tensen. His effectiveness rises substantially when he understands how Tao can be used and countered.
3. Shugen
Shugen is an exceptionally capable Asaemon and holds the formal rank of Ittō-ryū second. His discipline, skill and ability to respond to formidable opponents make him one of the strongest human fighters. He ranks below Gabimaru because Gabimaru’s mix of combat styles and adaptation gives him a broader toolkit in unfamiliar conditions. Shugen’s Asaemon rank supports his standing, but is not itself a head-to-head result.

4. Chōbei Aza
Known as the “Bandit King,” Chōbei is defined by adaptability and survival through repeated violent ordeals. His capacity to change with a fight makes him more dangerous than a fighter who relies on one clean exchange or a fixed plan. He ranks below the most complete specialists, but his resilience and ability to evolve keep him among the strongest convicts.

5. Ju Fa
Ju Fa is one of the Tensen, a group whose Tao-based abilities and extraordinary survivability make them a different class of opponent from ordinary swordsmen. Ju Fa’s threat comes from those advantages as well as combat capability, not simply the Tensen label. The official profiles identify different practices among the Tensen but do not canonically rank them; this placement reflects Ju Fa’s demonstrated danger in the story, not a published tier list.
6. Tao Fa
Tao Fa also combines Tensen durability with dangerous Tao techniques. Tao Fa and Ju Fa are close enough that their relative placement is less certain than the gap between either of them and most human fighters. Against an opponent who lacks Tao understanding or a suitable counter, Tao Fa’s advantages can outweigh a difference in conventional sword skill.
7. Shion
Shion is a blind Asaemon ranked fourth in Ittō-ryū. His ability to perceive through smell and sound makes his fighting style unusually difficult to exploit, and his swordsmanship gives him a strong foundation even when circumstances are unfamiliar. He is not higher because specialized Tao threats and the strongest adaptable fighters present a different level of difficulty.

Zhu Jin’s standing comes from the Tensen’s combination of Tao ability and exceptional survival, rather than from an assumption that every Tensen is equally strong. Zhu Jin is a dangerous opponent in a direct fight, but Tao-specific counters and the conditions of an encounter matter. The official character material describes the group’s research disciplines; it does not certify a ranking among its members.
9. Mu Dan
Mu Dan’s Tensen nature gives it the regeneration and Tao-related threat profile that can make a straightforward victory difficult. That is a major advantage against fighters who depend on conventional damage. It is not an automatic win: knowledge, technique and the ability to exploit a vulnerability can change the outcome.

10. Ran
Ran is another Tensen whose combat danger is amplified by Tao and unusual survivability. Ran belongs in the upper half of the ranking because an opponent must solve more than a normal physical contest to prevail. The precise order of the Tensen is interpretive; their official profiles establish identities and disciplines, not a final strength ladder.
11. Jikka
Jikka holds the Asaemon rank of third, but his real ability is described in the official profile as difficult to fathom. That ambiguity should not be inflated into invented feats or certainty about how he would fare against every other fighter. His high placement reflects his formal standing and the threat implied by his capabilities, with a wider margin of uncertainty than for characters with clearer combat evidence.
12. Yuzuriha
Yuzuriha is a highly capable kunoichi known as “Yuzuriha of Keishu.” Her official profile notes that she subdued all the retainers in the Kagiwa Castle incident. Deception, speed and tactical judgment make her more dangerous than a simple comparison of strength or sword skill suggests. She ranks below the most powerful direct combatants, but her ability to choose how an encounter unfolds is a substantial advantage.
13. Gantetsusai Tamiya
Gantetsusai is a formidable swordsman called the “Dragon of Yashu, peerless under heaven.” The epithet is reputation, not a measured comparison against the full cast. His swordsmanship, determination and ability to hold his own against island threats justify a strong placement, though he does not have the same all-around supernatural toolkit as the Tensen or Gabimaru.
14. Mei
Mei’s small appearance conceals unusual abilities that can exceed what an observer expects. She matters in a strength ranking because her powers and knowledge of the island are not captured by physical size or conventional fighting credentials. Her position reflects her demonstrated importance and capability, while recognizing that she is not simply a standard duelist.

15. Shija
Shija is a cruel, ruthless ninja from Iwagakure and a serious threat because of training, aggression and familiarity with the world Gabimaru comes from. That background makes Shija a more dangerous opponent than an ordinary convict, but it does not alone put Shija at Gabimaru’s level. The official profile does not specify Shija’s gender, so this ranking does not assign one.
16. Rokurōta
Rokurōta’s enormous size and reputed ability to withstand swords signal extraordinary physical durability and force. In a contest decided by direct impact, that makes him terrifying. His position is lower than more versatile fighters because raw physical power is less reliable against opponents who can exploit tactics, Tao or a specialized weakness.
17. Eizen
Eizen is the first-ranked Asaemon, the highest formal position among the executioners named in the official profile. That is a meaningful signal of status and ability, but the title is not a universal combat ranking across convicts and Tensen. Eizen’s placement here reflects the limited basis for comparing his demonstrated combat record with the most dangerous island fighters, not a claim that rank one is meaningless.
18. Sagiri
Sagiri is a skilled swordswoman and Ittō-ryū rank twelve. Her composure and judgment develop under pressure, and her role is not reducible to formal rank or raw force. She ranks below the strongest specialists in a direct combat list, while remaining an important and capable fighter whose decisions can affect the outcome of a group encounter.
19. Tenza
Tenza holds Ittō-ryū rank ten. He is a trained Asaemon, but the evidence does not put him on the same level as the highest-ranked or most powerful combatants in this countdown. His formal standing is useful context, not enough by itself to establish victory over a more adaptable or supernaturally enhanced opponent.

20. Senta
Senta is an Asaemon ranked fifth, a higher formal position than several executioners listed above. His lower placement here illustrates why the Asaemon ladder cannot simply be copied as a cross-cast strength chart: the ranking also accounts for demonstrated fighting threat, the island’s extraordinary conditions and Tao matchups. He is skilled and disciplined, but less suited to a pure strength list than the characters above him.

This list compares overall threat, not the result of every possible duel. A fighter’s best advantage may be decisive against one opponent and much less useful against another. Tao understanding can turn an apparently unwinnable encounter into a survivable one; a Tensen’s regeneration can blunt conventional damage; stealth or deception can let a physically weaker combatant dictate the opening. Teamwork also matters: a group victory shows that the threat could be overcome under those conditions, not that each participant could necessarily defeat it alone.
The comparison is also sensitive to what “strength” means. A formal Asaemon rank records standing within that order. An epithet records reputation. Physical force, survivability, technical skill and ability to adapt are separate advantages. The countdown gives more weight to the total package in a serious fight than to any one label.
